USA co-captain Allen Iverson (Philadelphia 76ers) had never hit a game winning shot in his illustrious playing career until Wednesday night when, with time about out, he dribbled across mid-court and launched a game-wining 40-foot 3-pointer to lift the USA Senior Team (2-1) to an 80-77 victory over Germany (1-1) in front of a sold-out Kolnarena crowd numbering 18,000.

"It felt good when it left my hand, I knew it had a chance," said Iverson of his game winner. "I tried to side step him (his defender) just to get a little bit of space and I got a good look at the basket and fortunately it went in.

"That was my first buzzer-beater ever," added a smiling Iverson who was mobbed by his USA teammates after making the shot.

The Iverson answer was a fitting end to a game that was tight the entire way and one in which NBA All-Star Dirk Nowitzki almost single-handedly kept his country within striking distance. Nowitzki finished the night with a game best 32 points on 13-for-23 shooting overall, while adding 12 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

In a game in which neither team was able to post more than a a six point advantage, the fourth quarter saw the two teams stay within three points of each other the final 10 minutes.

The U.S. entered the fourth quarter trailing 61-60 and was behind 65-63 with 8:40 to play when Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets) scored five consecutive points to spark the Americans to a 68-65 lead with 8:00 to play.

Germany forward and former UNC player Ademola Okulaja made a three to tie the game at 68, and with 5:40 to go, Lamar Odom (Los Angeles Lakers) scored off a pass from Anthony to put the US up 70-68. Germany scored the game's next four points to move ahead 72-70 with 3:30 showing on the clock, but the USA evened the game after Stephon Marbury (New York Knicks) came up with a critical steal at mid-court, then found Anthony on the break for a layup with 1:57 left.

Iverson, in a preview of what was to come, swished a 3-pointer a blink before the shot clock expired to give the US a 75-72 lead with 1:18 remaining. The suspense continued and with 35 ticks left in the game, Nowitzki was fouled on a 3-point attempt and the Dallas Mavericks star made two of the three free throws to close the gap to a single point, 75-74.

Having committed just two fouls in the final quarter, Germany was forced to foul to get into the bonus and made three quick fouls before finally sending Anthony to the line to shoot two with 12.4 showing on the clock. Despite the roar of the frenzied, partisan crowd, Anthony calmly made both free throws to increase the USA lead to 77-74.

But Nowitzki had one more shot in him and pulling up at the top of the key, he watched his 3-pointer fall cleanly through with 3.8 seconds left to tie the contest 77-77.

Tim Duncan (San Antonio Spurs) then inbounded the ball to Iverson around the foul line and Iverson dribbled right, took a dribble across halfcourt and launched his first game winner.

The US offensive effort was headed by Duncan who finished with another impressive all-around effort, scoring a US high 19 points and grabbing a team best nine rebounds. Anthony added 16 points, and Iverson finished with 15. All12 U.S. players scored in the contest.

"It was a great basketball game. Germany played very well and any time you have a Dirk Nowitzki on an opposing team you have a very tough opponent," stated U.S. mentor Larry Brown.

"I think our players really got a lot out of these two games (against Italy on Aug. 3 and Germany Aug. 4). We made a lot of improvement from the game last night, but we have a long, long way to go. I think playing the last two nights is hopefully going to help us as this trip goes along."

The United States will return to the court Friday night in a game against 2002 World Champion Serbia and Montenegro in Belgrade. Friday night's game will be televised by ESPN at 7 p.m. (EDT).

The USA senior men opened their training on July 26 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla., and are pending the 20 days leading up to the start of the 2004 Athens Olympic basketball competition training in Jacksonville; Cologne; Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro; and Istanbul, Turkey, and will play a total of six exhibition games.

Following the game in Belgrade, the USA Senior National Team will conclude its tour in Istanbul, Turkey. Facing Turkey on Sunday, Aug. 8 in an ABC live nationally televised game (2 p.m. EDT), ESPN will show the Aug. 10 (1 p.m. EDT), USA-Turkey game live.

Through All-Star games, an MVP award and a trip to the NBA Finals, there was something missing in Allen Iverson's career. A perfect ending.

Iverson sank the first buzzer-beating shot of his nine-year career, a 14-footer in overtime, and scored 15 points to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 106-104 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Friday night.

"It's a great feeling to hit a shot with no time on the clock," said Iverson, who sank a halfcourt winner for the U.S. Olympic team against Germany in an exhibition game.

Iverson is getting used to dramatic shots.

He sent a game into overtime in the final seconds earlier this week, then didn't lose confidence against the Pacers even as he struggled with his shot. He played 44 minutes, but went just 5-for-23 from the floor.

"I just couldn't get in no type of rhythm," Iverson said. "I couldn't get warm. I couldn't feel my hands the whole game."

He was hot when it mattered, though, as Iverson took the ball the length of the court and beat the short-handed Pacers with a shot from just above the free throw line over Eddie Gill.

"His shots didn't fall until the last one, and who cares about the others?" coach Jim O'Brien said.

Kyle Korver made seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 23 points, Marc Jackson had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and John Salmons and Corliss Williamson each scored 15 points for the Sixers.

Korver capped Philadelphia's furious fourth-quarter comeback with a 3 from the top of the key with 3.6 seconds left, tying it 100-all.

"I knew we needed a 3, so I just backed up and took it," Korver said.

The win spoiled the return of Indiana's Ron Artest, benched for two games for asking for time off because of his busy schedule -- including producing an R&B album and working on his side career as a rapper. Coach Rick Carlisle said Artest "compromised the integrity of the team."

Artest scored 29 points and had a flagrant foul late in the fourth quarter, Jermaine O'Neal had a career-high 39 points, and Stephen Jackson 17 for Indiana. Artest and O'Neal combined for a 24-for-38 effort.

"If you try to do the right things, good things happen to you," Artest said. "I think everything happens for a reason. Nobody got hurt. There's a bunch of good people on this team."

Artest's return helped offset the absences of center Scot Pollard (sore back), forward Jonathan Bender (viral infection), guard Fred Jones (quad strain) and center John Edwards (personal reasons).

With Reggie Miller (hand), Anthony Johnson (hand) and Jeff Foster (hip) also out, the Pacers only had eight players available.

In overtime, they were down to five.

The Pacers lost O'Neal, who gave the Pacers a 102-100 lead on the first play of OT, when he fouled out after reaching in on Iverson on the next possession. Jamaal Tinsley (10 assists) and David Harrison also fouled out in overtime.

Four Pacers starters played at least 40 minutes through regulation while Iverson was the only Sixer to do so. Korver hit three contested 3s and scored 11 points in the fourth to rally Philadelphia from a 17-point deficit in the third quarter.

Seldom-used James Jones took the last shot for Indiana in OT, but Artest said he should have had the ball.

"We have confidence in all our teammates," Artest said. "If JJ was open, he would have knocked that shot down. I should have took that last shot."

While Artest was gone, the Pacers suffered a 102-68 loss Wednesday to the Clippers, the worst home loss in franchise history.

But with O'Neal and Artest getting along on the court -- after getting into a locker room shouting match last week -- the Pacers hardly needed anyone else. Artest instantly put the distractions of the past week behind him, tuning out the taunts of the fans to score 16 points in the first half.

Korver had the oddest play of the game in the first quarter when he attempted to pass the ball -- it looked like an alley-oop -- to Kenny Thomas, but the pass went in for a 3-pointer.
Game notes
Sixers G Aaron McKie was placed on the injured list with a strained left rotator cuff. He is expected to miss seven to 10 days. The 76ers also activated guards Kevin Ollie and John Salmons and placed guard Kendrick Brown (low back strain) on injured reserve. F Glenn Robinson remained on the injured list and is in Chicago tending to a family matter. C Samuel Dalembert (hamstring) missed his fourth straight game ... Harrison's dad, Dennis, was a defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles. ... The Sixers won consecutive overtime games for the first time since 1993.

After allowing Shaquille O'Neal to walk
all over them two nights ago, the league-worst Los Angeles
Clippers were burned at the buzzer by the league's most visible
new star -- Vince Carter.

Carter appeared to cost his team the game with a costly foul but
redeemed himself in heroic fashion, burying a 31-footer as time
expired to lift the Toronto Raptors to their franchise-record
seventh straight win, 95-94 over the hard-luck Clippers.

"It's a good feeling," Carter said. "The most important thing
is that we carried on our winning streak and that we executed
when it counted. It was good to pull out a victory like that
for the team."

For most of the game, Carter looked like the goat. He managed
just nine points on 3-of-11 shooting over the first three
quarters and was clearly out of sync with his teammates as the
Raptors fell behind 75-69 entering the final period.

Los Angeles, which allowed Lakers center O'Neal to score an NBA
season-high 61 points on Monday, appeared to have the Raptors'
superstar shut down.

But the All-Star forward turned it on, scoring 14 of his 23
points down the stretch as Toronto erased a 14-point
fourth-quarter deficit. The Raptors drew even at 92-92 on
Carter's jumper with 51 seconds left.

"I just wanted to continue to play," Carter said. "I played
hard defense to make up for my poor offense. But my team
believed in me and gave me the ball."

The reigning Rookie of the Year, who beat Boston with a
3-pointer at the buzzer eight days ago at the FleetCenter,
fouled Clippers rookie Lamar Odom on the perimeter with 1.5
seconds remaining and Odom made both free throws.

Carter was visibly upset at himself during the Raptors' ensuing
timeout but showed the poise of a veteran by grabbing Tracy
McGrady's inbounds pass, turning and firing a shot that swished
through, stunning the 18,176 fans in attendance at the Staples
Center. Clippers forward Tyrone Nesby inexplicably backed off
Carter.

"We called Vince's number in the huddle, so when we came out on
the court, he did exactly what we asked him to do," Toronto
coach Butch Carter said.

"I just turned around and was surprised I was so open," Vince
Carter said. "I don't worry about it when I'm struggling, just
keep playing, keep playing. Just do the little things."

Doug Christie scored 18 points and McGrady added 15 for Toronto,
which won six in a row from March 26-April 4, 1999. The Raptors
also have reeled off five straight road wins and improved to 4-0
on their five-game Western swing.

"It was one of those nights where everyone didn't come out to
play," McGrady said. "But we fought our way back in the game
and got the win."

Nesby and Derek Anderson scored 21 points each for the Clippers,
who have dropped 17 of their last 18 games and fell to a dismal
9-20 at home this season.

"Everybody played hard, that's why this loss hurts more than
anything," Nesby said.

Maurice Taylor scored 20 points and Odom added 16, 11 rebounds
and eight assists for Los Angeles, which shot 45 percent
(33-of-74), held a 38-36 advantage on the boards and forced 15
turnovers. The Clippers surrendered 22 points off turnovers.

"We played a great game, probably one of the best games I can
recall," Todd said.

Antonio Davis had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Kevin Willis
added 13 points for the Raptors, who shot 46 percent (36-of-78).

Carter showed signs of coming out of his three-quarter funk when
he hit a 26-footer to pull Toronto within 77-72 with 11:21 to
play. But Eric Piatkowski hit an 11-footer and two free throws,
Odom made a driving layup and Anderson hit a 3-pointer to
stretch margin to 86-72 with nine minutes left.

The Raptors came roaring back as McGrady dunked, Carter made a
jumper and Davis hit a free throw to cut the lead to nine. Nesby
and Carter exhanged baskets and Anderson made two free throws to
give Los Angeles a 90-79 lead with 4:54 left.

Dee Brown drained a 3-pointer before Carter dug into his arsenal
of highlight reel dunks, catching an alley-oop feed from Brown
behind his right shoulder and slamming it home to shave the
deficit to 90-84 with 3:29 remaining.

"You don't want to be down like that, but we kept our composure
and we started making good shots," McGrady said.

Willis made two free throws and a short jumper and Charles
Oakley pulled Toronto even at 90-90 on a 22-footer from the left
side with 1:16 left. Olowakandi put Los Angeles back in front
with a seven-foot hook, but Carter sank a 19-footer with 51
seconds remaining to set up the wild finish.

This was taken 24 February in Pearl Harbor Hawaii. Teams Hickam Spurs VS. Pearl Harbor Lakers. Lakers are winning 18-14 Spurs score a basket to make it 18-16. Lakers take the ball down and try to run out the clock Spurs grab the ball and we end up with a jump ball and the arrow is for the Spurs. I move my camera from mid court to the baseline to get the last few seconds as it will be the last shot. There is 4 seconds on the clock they pass it in and the Spurs player just a few feet in from half court launches this amazing shot at the Buzzer to win the game!!! TRULY AMAZING SHOT!
You see the whole gym erupt in cheer and this kid runs over to his team and it was just like the movies his teammates picked him on there shoulders and just were overjoyed in celebration. You also see the Lakers team cheering as they know that have just witnessed a truly amazing shot!
