Brian Sweet reports, "In US history the first real Black Friday occurred on September 24, 1869, a day of panic in the securities market which was repeated nine years later. The term is often used on both sides of the Atlantic for any day of crisis, financial or otherwise, but there is no evidence to suggest that Becker and Fagen were referring to any particular occasion. They had simply used their collective imaginations to create a fictitious incident.

A Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island, New York, store Friday morning, police and witnesses said.

The 34-year-old worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."

The unidentified victim was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:03 a.m., police said.

The cause of death wasn't immediately available pending results of an autopsy.

A 28-year-old pregnant woman was knocked to the floor during the mad rush. She was hospitalized for observation, police said. Early witness accounts that the woman suffered a miscarriage were unfounded, police said.

Three other shoppers suffered minor injuries, cops said.

Before police shut down the store, eager shoppers streamed past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the store clerk's life.

"They were working on him, but you could see he was dead, said Halcyon Alexander, 29. "People were still coming through."

Only a few stopped.

"They're savages," said shopper Kimberly Cribbs, 27. "It's sad. It's terrible."

Rugby League World Cup 2008: Toa Samoa beats Mate Ma'a Tonga. Samoa defeats Tonga 20-12 in World Cup match proving to be too strong for Tonga.

Center George Carmont's try the only scoring of the second half helped Samoa to a 20-12 win over Tonga on Friday in a Pacific Islands grudge match at the Rugby League World Cup.

Tonga, which beat Ireland 22-20 in its opening match Monday, had the bulk of early possession but trailed 10-0 at Penrith in western suburban Sydney. It was Samoa's first match of the tournament.

Captain Nigel Vagana scored a 90-meter intercept try and Bulldogs National Rugby League star Matt Utai added a second as Samoa led 14-12 halftime after winger Francis Meli had given Samoa a 4-0 lead after three minutes.

Tonga hooker Tevita Leo-Latu scored his team's first try and center Michael Jennings the other after taking a flick pass from Tony Williams, who provided Tonga's other points with two goals.

The match featured several big hits and crunching tackles. Samoan prop Kylie Leulau'i was placed on report by referee Shayne Hayne for a high tackle on Tonga fullback Fetuli Talanoa in the first half.

The prelude to the match between the traditional rivals was fiery. The singers of the national anthems walked off arm in arm with their national flags in a show of unity, but there was nothing friendly about the threatening war dances each team performed minutes later.

Samoa did their war dance the Siva Tau at the same time screaming out Samoan War Cries proceeding from their 35-meter line up to 50. They stood at the halfway line while Tonga did their Sipi Tau, but despite much screaming, mock slitting of throats and swordplay, order prevailed as neither team crossed the midfield line.

At halftime, several players exchanged heated words as they trotted to the sidelines.

The last 10 minutes featured good scoring chances by each team before costly turnovers ended the threats.

At the end of the match, fans invaded the pitch, forcing a television interview with Michael Jennings of Tonga to be cut short when spectators began jostling with the interviewer and Jennings.

Overall both teams played a hard, tough and entertaining game. Everyone kept their heads. Literally!

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras - A jetliner overshot a runway and raced onto a busy street in the Honduran capital on Friday, killing the pilot, two passengers and a motorist on the ground. At least 65 people were injured.

The Grupo Taca Airbus A320 with 140 people on board was flying a Los Angeles-San Salvador-Tegucigalpa route and was scheduled to head next to Miami. It ended up with its nosed smashed against a roadside embankment and its fuselage buckled and broken in places.

Authorities frantically hosed down cars trapped beneath the wreckage as thousands of gallons of fuel gushed from the jet.

Rescuers pried open part of the wreckage to get the pilot and co-pilot out, but the pilot didn't survive, said Cesar Villalta, director of Honduras' military hospital.

Passenger Harry Brautigam, a Nicaraguan who headed a regional development bank, died of heart failure. The body of a man trapped under the wreckage was believed to be a taxi driver.

Janneth Shantall, the wife of Brazilian Ambassador Brian Michael Fraser Neele, was also killed in the crash. The former head of Honduras' armed forces, Gen. Daniel Lopez Carballo, was also among the injured.

A statement from the office of President Manuel Zelaya said the flight originated in Los Angeles and that 65 people were injured in crash. TACA spokeswoman Sofia Valverde said the flight was scheduled to continue on to Miami.

Taca released a statement saying there were seven Americans, two Spaniards, three Mexicans, two Colombians and nine Argentines aboard the flight. Almost all the remaining passengers were from Central American countries.

Following the crash, officials acknowledged that the runways of Tegucigalpa's aging Toncontin International Airport are short and its approach paths are dangerous. The airport is ringed by hills, posing a special challenge for pilots.

There was no official cause given for the crash, but weather may have also been a factor. The runway was wet with rain from Tropical Storm Alma.

"The plane inexplicably circled the city twice and it ran out of runway because it landed more than halfway down" the length of the strip, airport manager Carlos Ramos told the Channel 7 television network.

The plane "didn't touch down were they normally do, at the start of the runway ... and that is being investigated," Ramos said.

Many passengers walked away from the accident.

Mirtila Lopez, 71, said she was talking to another passenger when the plane "left the runway, hit electric cables from a nearby street and then got stuck in the side of a small ravine."

Honduran air officials said they would close the terminal to large jets and permanently transfer those flights to the former military airfield at Palmerola.

Larger jets will now operate out of the Palmerola airport, also known as the Soto Cano base, about 30 miles north of the capital.

Used by the United States during the Central American civil wars of the 1980s, Palmerola has the best runway in the country at 8,850 feet long and 165 feet wide.

There have been calls for years to replace the aging Toncontin airport, which is considered to be one of the world's more dangerous international airports.

The airport was built in 1948 with a runway less than 5,300 feet long — shorter than that of a small field such as Municipal Airport in Goldsboro, North Carolina

The altitude of some 3,300 feet forces pilots to use more runway on landings and takeoffs than they would at sea level.

In 1997, a U.S. Air Force C-130 cargo plane overshot the runway at Toncontin and rolled 200 yards before bursting into flames on a major boulevard, killing three people aboard.
