K. Michael Hays (Arch 1976) presented drawings and models from the Buckminster Fuller archive that demonstrate his understanding of the geometrical foundation of natural and designed phenomena. Presented on October 29, 2008, in the Architecture Auditorium.

Michael Hays has played a central role in the advancement of architectural theory and the role of the architect as cultural critic. As editor of Assemblage and author of numerous books, he has focused attention on the work of Hannes Meyer, Ludwig Hilberseimer and Mies van der Rohe; as well as Peter Eisenman, Machado & Silvetti and the late John Hejduk. He is the Eliot Noyes Professor of Architectural Theory at Harvard University and the first curator of architecture at the Whitney Museum of American Art where he directed the recent exhibition on Buckminster Fuller.

Co-curators Dana Miller and Michael Hays discuss Buckminster Fuller: Starting with the Universe, an exhibition featuring one of the great American visionaries of the twentieth century. Utilizing his doing "more with less" credo, Fuller's designs endeavored to benefit the largest portion of humanity while consuming the minimum amount of the earth's resources. This video presents four examples of Fuller's integrated approach to the design and technology of housing, transportation, and cartography--the Dymaxion House, ca. 1930, Dymaxion Transport Vehicle, ca.1933 , Wichita House, ca. 1945, and The Fuller Projection Map, ca. 1943.

R. Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) was one of the great American visionaries of the 20th century. Best-known as the inventor of the geodesic dome, Fuller devoted much of his life to resolving the gap between the sciences and the humanities, which he believed was preventing society from taking a comprehensive view of the world. His theories and innovations traversed the worlds of architecture, visual art, literature, mathematics, molecular biology, and environmental science and have had a deep impact on all of those fields.

Trim Tab as Metaphor

The engineer Buckminster Fuller is often cited for his use of trim tabs as a metaphor for leadership and personal empowerment. In the February 1972 issue of Playboy, Fuller said:

Something hit me very hard once, thinking about what one little man could do. Think of the Queen Mary -- the whole ship goes by and then comes the rudder. And there's a tiny thing at the edge of the rudder called a trim tab.

It's a miniature rudder. Just moving the little trim tab builds a low pressure that pulls the rudder around. Takes almost no effort at all. So I said that the little individual can be a trim tab. Society thinks it's going right by you, that it's left you altogether. But if you're doing dynamic things mentally, the fact is that you can just put your foot out like that and the whole big ship of state is going to go.

So I said, call me Trim Tab.
