The Emancipation Network opened Destiny Productions at the Thomas Clayton Center in Calcutta, India, to address this challenge. Rescued survivors will now be able to work at the new production center, and support themselves independently for the first time in their lives. Providing the back up vocals are Sally Flynn, Sandi Griffiths, Mary Lou Metzger and Gail Farrell

Vocal version of the instrumental 1961 Lawrence Welk hit. Charted at #96 on Billboard Hot 100 in 1961.

There are no decent, original recordings of this on YT so I felt obligated to post one. The fact that I love the song is beside the point. Interestingly it has nothing to do with Calcutta, India. It is derived from a European melody whose name sounds a little like Calcutta, hence the title. Musically, it's a neat arrangement with a key change up a fourth and then back down a fourth.

Objective

Notations of J.S Bach were made visible across busy junctions of the city by using overhead wires as staves. The notes were also played through the kiosks, evoking an instant response.

Result
The message was immediately communicated to the music enthusiasts and prospective students across Kolkata.

Kolkata never changes her good habits and remains always the same benevolent and charming despite all modernization taking place. The unique city is a way of life most of her people love to practice. Kolkata - the intellectual deposit of India!

This is one of the earliest films to be shot in India - it was filmed in 1899.

The film apparently shows the Calcutta ghats as seen from the perspective of a boat travelling along the Hooghly river, a tributary of the Ganges.

However, although the film's title states that this is Calcutta, the footage was in fact shot in the holy city of Varanasi (also on the Ganges). The filmmaker from the Warwick Trading Company clearly had a short memory or a limited sense of geography. (Robin Baker)

This is from a live recording in Calcutta. The unusual thing about this performance is that Khansahib played the drut gat bandish from the Maihar Gharana. He liked the gat that was taught to Partho Da and wanted to play it. Accompanying them on tabla is Ashish Pal. Sitting in front row were Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, Pandit Suresk Talwalkar and Shree Subroto Roy Chodhuri. The Yaman Kalyan performance lasted for almost 3 hours!!

They would come out with their Monkeys, Snakes, Bears on the street. If a crowd gathered around them they would put up a show. The typical snake charmers played the twin piped woodwind instrument called 'Bin' or 'Pungi' and hypnotize the King Cobra or other deadly venomous snake with this music. The snake would be shaking its head in rhythm with the snake charmer's hand movements. Many times they would have a junior apprentice walk a tight rope, get stabbed, cough up blood from his mouth etc. At the end of the show they would circulate a collection bowl and people would throw in some spare change. Often times they had a special client who they performed for an agreed price. The uninvited kids like me and other people looking for a freebie show took advantage of this. We literally saw these shows for free, many times, as it was not obligatory to put money in the bowl circulating for collection. These are my early childhood memories of growing up in kolkata.

The child artist here performing for me with his monkeys is a class act. His act - a time tested classic involving two monkeys named after the two most popular film stars of the time. There is the celebrity wedding in this act. There is romance, tragedy and ultimately everything ends up on a happier note. He has a little two sided drum called 'Dugdugi 'he plays to keep rhythm with his singing. He sings some popular Hindi Film songs in the act and his stars, these monkeys dance, do acrobatics and act to his tune. Perhaps a major breadwinner for his family, this child artist performing on the street, is part of a fast vanishing breed of artists with their classic art form from the 'Street Theatre Scene' of Kolkata. Well, Cable TV and Internet cannibalized his patrons.
