Libertador y Gobernante de Chile, General José Miguel Carrera Verdugo, ante el desembarco de las tropas realistas en 1813, asumió la comandancia del ejército, combatiendo heroicamente en Yerbas Buenas, San Carlos y Talcahuano. Sin Embargo, el fracaso del sitio a Chillán lo convirtio en blanco de ataques politicos por parte de quienes veian en el a un peligroso revolucionario. Ante aquel escenario, el patriota cedió el mando de las tropas a Bernardo O´higgins, quien ya contaba con una prominente lista de éxitos militares y con el apoyo de las clases influyentes del pais. Luego de la Firma del Tratado de Lircay, un orgulloso Carrera encabezó una nueva revuelta para deponer al Director Supremo, considerandoque el horizonte de la independencia se estaba perdiendo por completo. Ante ello, marcharon las tropas de O´higgins para enfrentar al caudillo, siendo derrotados por Luis Carrera en la Batalla de las Tres Acequias. Aquel acontecimiento, definiría para siempre la tensa y odiosa relación que mantendrian los líderes de la emancipación. Derrotas, huidas y peleas: El arribo de un nuevo contingente español obligó a los bandos a unirse en pos de una causa común. Sin embargo, el avance realista fue mas rápido y contundente, aplastando definitivamente a los patriotas en el Desastre de Rancagua, quienes huyeron a Argentina para reorganizar la lucha. A pesar de que José Miguel deseaba permanecer en suelo patrio par combatir, los hechos obligaron a marchar junto a sus hermanos hacia Mendoza, protegiendo desde la retaguardia a la maltrecha multitud nacional que huía. El arribo de José Miguel a Mendoza no fue del todo afortunado, pues su apasionado discruso e inagotable espíritu luchador, lo hicieron enemistarse con los lideres trasandinos, quienes decidieron aliarse con O´higgins. Un Libertador infatigable: En la capital trasandina, José Miguel se reencontro con Carlos María Alvear, antiguo compañero y respetado héroe argentino que compartía ideales similares a los de Carrera. De apasionado proceder, Alvear se tomo el poder en Buenos Aires y acordó ayudar a la liberación de Chile. Sin embargo, ante la presión cobarde de la aristocracia porteña, el respetado lider militar debió abdicar, destruyendo las esperanza de José Miguel, quien decidió embarcarse a los Estados Unidos para conseguir allí la tan preciada ayuda. Sin dinero y sin siquiera hablar inglés, el caudillo nacional logró sobreponerse a todas las dificultades, asombrando a los más influyentes norteamericanos. Así, consiguio entrevistarse con el presidente estadounidense James Madison, quien le otorgó finalmente asistencia a través de armas, soldados y una pequeña escuadra. Traición, despojo y venganza: Advertido por la ambiciones de José Miguel Carrera, la autoridad argentina-chilena temió por su proyecto libertario que ya estaba en marcha en Los Andes y confiscó los barcos que el prócer chileno había conseguido. En prisión José Miguel se enteró allí de la ejecución de sus hermanos Juan José y Luis, a quienes se les acusó en Mendoza de conspirar contra el gobierno chileno. Jurando venganza, Carrera se entregó a la tarea de desprestigiar las motivaciones de José de San Martín, a través de cartas y panfletos que promovían un estado federal en Argentina. El "Pichi-Rey" de la Pampa: Aventurandose una vez mas, viajo el caudillo hasta las Provincias Unidas del Rio de la Plata y entabló alianza con los federalistas, quienes ya iniciaban la lucha interna por el poder. De esta forma, fueron cuatro veces los ataques de Carrera a la ciudad de Buenos Aires, tomándola por asalto en dos oportunidades. Allí se le ofreció el cargo de Director Supremo, pero el prócer lo rechazó por cuanto su objetivo se encontraba al otro lado de Los Andes, cediendo entonces el cargo a su amigo Manuel de Sarratea. Los movimientos internos en la política argentina, le impidieron a José Miguel lograr su objetivo de marchar hacia Chile para liberarlo de la dictadura de O´higgins. Solo pero infatigable, formó el patriota una montonera con soldados chilenos e indigenas que lo proclamaron "Pichi-Rey" (pequeño rey). La muerte de un Libertador: Intentando avanzar hacia la patria, fue traicionado por el comandante cordobés Manuel Arias y entregado a la justicia. Enjuiciado y condenado a muerte, fue fusilado el 4 de septiembre en Mendoza, de pie y sosteniendo un pañuelo en su corazón. Su último deseo de dar la orden de fuego fue negado, por cuanto las autoridades temían que con eso crecería aún mas su fama de héroe.
