Chechen surgeon Khassan Baiev returns to war-torn Grozny to help children maimed by landmines and the legacy of war - "the lost children of Chechnya".

At the start of October, the war-ravaged and almost forgotten territory of Chechnya, was hit by two big stories: an earthquake and snap parliamentary elections. However, the territory is conspicuous by its absence from the international media agenda. We look at why the global mainstream media seems to have a collective blind spot in the Northern Caucasus.

How will the killing of Aslan Maskhadov affect fighting in Chechnya? As images of Maskhadov's body circulate, we bring back the last ever interview Maskhadov recorded.

The First Chechen War also known as the War in Chechnya was fought between Russia and Chechnya from 1994 to 1996 and resulted in Chechnya's de facto independence from Russia as the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.

After the initial campaign of 1994--1995, culminating in the devastating Battle of Grozny, Russian federal forces attempted to control the mountainous area of Chechnya but were set back by Chechen guerrilla warfare and raids on the flatlands in spite of Russia's overwhelming manpower, weaponry, and air support. The resulting widespread demoralization of federal forces, and the almost universal opposition of the Russian public to the brutal conflict, led Boris Yeltsin's government to declare a ceasefire in 1996 and sign a peace treaty a year later.

The official figure for Russian military losses is 5,500, while most estimates put the number between 3,500 and 7,500, one as high as 14,000.[5] Although there are no accurate figures for the number of Chechen militants killed, the official Russian estimate puts the number at about 15,000. Chechen separatists claim no more than 3,000. Various figures estimate the number of civilian deaths between 50,000 - 100,000, and over 200,000 injured. More than 500,000 persons were displaced by the conflict,[6] as cities and villages across the republic were left in ruins.

For Chechen civilians, Russia's 'clean-up' operations amounts to little more than genocide. Even Russian soldiers condemn their actions in Chechnya.

When Ivan volunteered to fight in the second Chechen war, he had scant understanding of what he would experience. Even now, he remains deeply troubled by his time there. Lack of supplies and widespread alcoholism fuelled acts of brutality. His ill equipped unit had little choice but to rob civilians. "We had to feed ourselves. Of course we turned to looting. Of course we'd kill," he says. He believes the Chechens are being forced into acts of terrorism out of desperation and revenge. "We'd come in the house and kill five people -- one survives, they have nothing to live for and it becomes blood for blood." 60 year old Sowdat has seen two of her children killed by the Russians. Another two have disappeared without a trace. "It's genocide and it's conducted openly," states Rusen Badalov, of the Chechen Salvation Committee. Despite Putin's assurance to the contrary, Chechens believe that a bloody war is being waged against them. Daily 'disappearances' in every village tell the same story. It seems that Russia's campaign to impose order is creating the terrorism they mean to crush.

He's Russia's most wanted man, responsible for Beslan and the Moscow theatre siege. In his first interview since Russian troops went back into Chechnya, Shamil Basayev gives his account.

Wearing a T-shirt blazon with the words 'anti-terror' and cradling a grenade launcher, Shamily Basayev speaks of his remorse for Beslan. "I didn't expect such cruelty ... I never thought they'd do it." But he's not talking about what his men did. He's blaming the Russians for storming the school. In his eleven year career, Basayev has become notorious for acts of extreme violence. Ten years ago, 130 died after he seized a hospital in South Russia. Then came the Moscow theatre siege. But in targeting children, he went too far. Global revulsion allowed Putin to discredit the Chechen's fight for independence. However despite the backlash, Basayev claims he'd do it all again. "You must understand us correctly. We are at war."

Admiral Flota Sovetskogo Soyuza Kuznetsov, constructed at Nikolayev South Shipyard in Nikolayev, was launched in 1985, and became fully operational in 1995. An official ceremony marking the start of construction took place on September 1, 1982; in fact she was laid down in 1983. The vessel was first named Riga, but in November 1982 the name was changed to Leonid Brezhnev, in August 1987 to Tbilisi, and finally on October 4, 1990 to Admiral Flota Sovetskogo Soyuza Kuznetsov, referred to in short as Admiral Kuznetsov. The ship was 71% complete by the summer of 1989. In November 1989 she undertook her first aircraft operation trials. In December 1991, she sailed from the Black Sea to join the Northern Fleet. Only from 1993 on was she equipped with planes. Kuznetsov made a brief Mediterranean training cruise early in 1996. At the end of 1997 she remained immobilized in a Northern Fleet shipyard, awaiting funding for major repairs, which were halted when they were only 20% complete. The overhaul was finally completed in July 1998, and the ship formally returned to active service in the Northern fleet on November 3, 1998. The Kuznetsov apparently remained in port for about two years before participating in operations related to the rescue and salvage of the Kursk submarine in late 2001. Plans for further operations were postponed or cancelled. In late 2003 and early 2004, the Kuznetsov went to sea for inspection and trials. In late October 2004, she participated in a fleet exercise of the Russian navy in the Atlantic Ocean, and again in September 2005. During the 2005 exercise, one of her Su-33 fighters was involved in an accident, and fell from the carrier into the Atlantic Ocean.

Although financial and technical problems have resulted in limited operations for the ship, it is expected that Admiral Kuznetsov will remain in active duty until at least 2030.

On September 27, 2006 it was announced that Admiral Kuznetsov will return to the Northern Fleet by the end of the year. The ship will undergo another modernization refit, in an attempt to correct some of its many technical issues. Admiral Vladimir Masorin, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, also stated that several Su-33 fighters assigned to the aircraft carrier would return to the ship after undergoing maintenance and refits of their own.
