Los palacios del Renacimiento Italiano ofrecen una importante novedad: la ausencia de elementos fortificados característicos de los castillos medievales. Las fachadas se presentan más estilizadas, aunque aún muestran elementos almohadillados, y desaparecen torreones, saeteras y fosos. Buena muestra de estos palacios la encontramos en Florencia: el palacio Medici, obra maestra de Michelozzo, construido en 1444, o el palacio Strozzi, levantado entre 1489 y 1507 por Benedetto da Maiano. En Roma destaca el palacio Farnesio, construido por Antonio de Sangallo para Alejandro Farnesio desde 1540, y concluido por Miguel Angel. El esquema palacial no es igual en todas las ciudades italianas como podemos observar en Venecia, obligados sus palacios a presentar una disposición diferente debido a la geografía del lugar. Buena muestra de los palacios venecianos son la Ca Vendramin-Calergi, construido por Mauro Codussi para la familia Loredan entre 1481 y 1509, y el palacio Corner, iniciado en 1537 por Jacopo Sansovino. Tomando como modelo las villas romanas, las poderosas familias italianas también se construyeron excelentes casas de campo. Entre las más interesantes encontramos la Villa Careggi en Florencia, sede de la Academia neoplatónica de Marsilio Ficino en tiempos de Lorenzo el Magnífico; la Villa Madama de Roma, diseñada por Rafael entre 1516 y 1520 para el futuro papa Clemente VII; o la Villa Farnesio de Caprarola, obra maestra de Vignola levantada entre 1559-64. El urbanismo también sufrió una importante transformación, como se pone de manifiesto en los diseños presentados por los mejores arquitectos. Entre ellos destaca Sforzinda, proyecto de ciudad ideal realizado por Filarete entre 1460 y 1464. Rossellino pudo llevar a cabo sus planteamientos en la ciudad de Pienza, proyecto personal del papa Pío II. Las ideas renacentistas no penetrarán en todos los países con igual fuerza. En Francia todavía podemos observar ecos medievales en sus castillos, mezclados con toques de modernidad, como se aprecia en Chambord, Blois o Fontainebleau. En España la influencia italiana llega en el siglo XVI, como observamos en el Palacio de Carlos V en Granada, obra de Pedro de Machuca. Pero la arquitectura peninsular pronto tendrá un modelo propio: el Escorial, proyecto de Juan de Herrera para el rey Felipe II que se convertirá en la fuente más utilizada por los posteriores arquitectos españoles. Dos ejemplos los hallamos en el Ayuntamiento de Madrid o la Plaza Mayor de la capital, obras de Juan Gómez de Mora. La ampulosidad barroca no sólo se manifiesta en las iglesias sino que también se extiende a los palacios. Buena muestra la encontramos en el Palacio Barberini de Roma, con intervenciones de Bernini y Borromini o en el Palacio Carignano de Turín, construido por Guarino Guarini entre 1679 y 1681. Pero el momento culminante de la arquitectura palaciega en Europa, tanto por sus dimensiones como la magnificencia de su estructura lo encontramos en Francia: el palacio de Versalles. Esta fiebre palaciega tiene su extensión en el siglo XVIII, centuria en la que se edificaron buena parte de los palacios reales de Europa. En Italia destaca el Palazzo Reale de Caserta, levantado en 1751 por Luigi Vanvitelli. En España, Juvara y Sachetti participan en la edificación del Palacio Real de Madrid, con un esquema que se repite en el Palacio Real de Aranjuez, edificio reformado por Bonavia y Sabatini entre 1748 y 1771. En Alemania sobresalen el Zwinger de Dresde, la obra maestra de Pöppelman levantada entre 1697 y 1716, y la Residencia de Wurzburgo, construida entre 1720 y 1744 por Balthasar Neumann.
