Le technion est une des écoles d'application de l'Ecole Polytechnique. Le Technion, réputé pour être une version israélienne du MIT américain, est une institution majeure de l’Etat Hébreu. Plus qu’octogénaire, cet établissement a formé, depuis avant même la création d’Israël, l’élite scientifique et manageriale du pays juif. Le Technion a été créé au tout début du XXème siècle par une institution juive allemande (Ezrah) comme école de sciences et d’ingénierie, la seule institution d’enseignement supérieur de ce qui était alors l’Empire Ottoman. Même si les travaux débutèrent en 1912, ce n’est que 12 ans plus tard que les études y ont véritablement commencé après que fut réglé le grand débat qui opposait parmi les fondateurs de l’établissement les partisans de l’enseignement en allemand et les partisans de l’enseignement en hébreu. Ce n’est qu’après la défaite de l’Allemagne en 1918 et le déclin de son influence internationale que l’hébreu fut définitivement adopté. Le Technion occupe aujourd’hui une surface de 1 325 000 m², compte 85 bâtiments comprenant 18 facultés et départements. Sa population étudiante est de près de 13 000 personnes, un quart d’entre eux effectuant des études supérieures à bac+3 (post graduate). Le palmarès de l ‘établissement est pour le moins impressionnant : plus de 70% des créateurs et managers d’entreprises de high tech en Israël sont ses anciens élèves. Autant dire que le fait qu’Israël soit devenu l’endroit dans le monde où la concentration de start-up de haute technologie est la plus forte après la Silicon Valley est directement liée à la qualité de l’enseignement du Technion. A titre de rappel, l’industrie high tech représente 54% des exportations industrielles et 26% du total des exportations d’Israël. Pas moins des trois quarts des managers de l’industrie électronique d’Israël ont un diplôme du Technion. Le Technion compte depuis 2004 deux prix Nobel dans son corps professoral, Pr Avram Hershko et Aaron Ciechanover de la Faculté de Médecine ont reçu le prix de Chimie pour leur découverte du rôle crucial de l’ubiquitine dans le processus de séparation des cellules. L’Université est également à l’origine de plusieurs découvertes comme l’algorithme Lempel-Ziv-Welch qui fut développé par deux professeurs du Technion, Abraham Lempel et Jacob Ziv. Cet algorithme et ses évolutions sont mondialement reconnus et utilisés, par exemple, dans le format d’image numérique GIF, ou certains logiciels de compression tels que StuffitX. Dans un autre domaine, la rasagiline, qui traite la maladie de Parkinson, a été mise au point par le professeur Moussa Youdim autre professeur du célèbre établissement. Cependant, pour vraiment se faire une vraie idée de ce que c’est que d’étudier au Technion, il faut aller chercher un peu plus loin que le « discours officiel » et aller rencontrer les étudiants. Evidemment, le ton est tout de suite plus critique que ce que l’on peut voir sur les documents de l’université. « Exigeant » est le mot d’ordre. A l’image du système préparationnaire français, le but du Technion est de faire de ses étudiants des gens capables de supporter de grosses charges de travail et de s’organiser efficacement. C’est très difficile. Beaucoup jettent l’éponge après les premiers semestres. De plus, le corps professoral, avant tout constitué de chercheurs, n’est pas aussi « bon professeur » que l’on pourrait imaginer. De l’avis de Galith, ancienne étudiante en Engineering au Technion, « la qualité de l’enseignement n’est pas extraordinaire, la vraie différence, c’est le niveau d’exigence ». Sur une note plus positive, l’ambiance de travail est bonne, les élève s’entraident et l’on acquiert vraiment là-bas, la capacité à travailler vite et bien.
