Hillary Clinton on David Letterman Feb 4 2008 Part One FROM THE DAILY KOS COMMENT BOARD:: Think Dean.....then Edwards...now Obama. It is always the safe candidate of opposition of interest. It is always about getting Democrats elected. Not successfully much of the time (think Francine Busby, Kucinich), but trying and pushing the edge of what is possible. The problem with any of these is that campaign politics is always an edifice or scaffolding built around the strengths and weaknesses of an established politician, or one that needs a mythology , or an advertising/marketing/ persuading effort being invented or reinvented. We have some good people that are just not good enough or likeable enough, or connected enough with the elites to be vetted and declared the winners. And we have barely 50% of the voting public to decide their fate after a brief advertising campaign and message implanting. The Obama stuff reminds me of the McGovern stuff back in 1972. Everything you wished for might be happening with a kind and decent man like (fill in the blank). He was a Food for Peace administrator, and spoke to what a lot of people needed to hear. He was also an insurgent, outside candidate. the best thing was reforming the old rules of the Party about democracy inside and getting better quality people to survive weeding out. The general election was a rout. What did the Democrats learn from that debacle? I believe the ability of HRC as a leader, strategist, executive and administrator are huge strengths that are far superior to other candidates running on either side. And the mess she will inherit on taking office will challenge them all fully for the entirety of her terms. her public appearances project calmness and confidence. That might be her most "winning" features. There is a huge negative debt built up over the years. Tearing down democrats, gutting every decent thing that government can do, replacing government competence with privatized shell companies to do the work (badly) with a fraction of the employees that agencies used to do properly and get done and be accountable for. The attack on WJC and then HRC is an attempt to make government irrelevant and the corporate world the answer to every problem. The justification for it was the need to have private groups benefit from profit taking out of all missions the people formerly shared. The hatred and destruction of the commons. The Clintons were the target but burying abilities of government to help and not be a burden on ordinary people was the aim all along of the Right Wingers and Republican ideologists. Reversing years of malign neglect, the trashing of agencies that supported Americans in many spheres, be it health or education is somrthing the Repubs do not want. the worst of them who have done criminal things are worried about genuine investigations, prosecutions and haqving to disgorge many ill gotten gains (like the profiteering bunch in Iraq and elsewhere. Clinton is feared as someone who might demand payback, both literally and figuratively.
