Los nueve casos aquí presentados no son de manera alguna un número completo y exhaustivo de los perseguidos políticos en Venezuela, sino más bien un modesto pero significativo reflejo de los más diversos sectores de la sociedad que padecen los atropellos del régimen en sus diferentes grados (militares, periodistas, estudiantes, jueces, artistas y ciudadanos comunes). Con el gobierno del Presidente Hugo Chávez se ha registrado el más elevado número de discriminación política en la historia de Venezuela. Son cada día creciente los elevados índices de violaciones a los derechos humanos, incluyendo casos suficientemente documentados de tortura. Se han registrado más de doscientos casos de arresto indebido, detención arbitraria y múltiples agresiones físicas y verbales a quienes disienten públicamente, haciendo ejercicio de su derecho a manifestar de manera pacífica. Los Caracas Nine representan nueve casos emblemáticos de la tendencia política del gobierno venezolano actual.

Machu Picchu es considerada al mismo tiempo una obra maestra de la arquitectura y la ingeniería 5. Está en la lista del Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 1983. Sus peculiares características arquitectónicas y paisajísticas y el velo de misterio que ha tejido a su alrededor buena parte de la literatura publicada sobre el sitio, lo han convertido en uno de los destinos turísticos más populares del mundo 6 y el principal de Perú, donde es un ícono nacional.

Machu Picchu is probably the most familiar symbol of the Inca Empire. Since 1983 the site has been designated as a United Nations Educational World Heritage Site.
It is thought that the city was built by the Sapa Inca Pachacuti, starting in about 1440, and was inhabited until the Spanish conquest of Peru in 1532. Archaeological evidence (together with recent work on early colonial documents) shows that Machu Picchu was not a conventional city, but a country retreat town for Inca nobility (similar to the Roman villas). The site has a large palace and temples dedicated to Inca deities around a courtyard, with other buildings for support staff. It is estimated that a maximum of only about 750 people resided in Machu Picchu at any one time, and probably only a small fraction of that number lived in the town during the rainy season and when none of the nobility were visiting.
It is thought that the site was chosen for its unique location and geological features. It is said that the silhouette of the mountain range behind Machu Picchu represents the face of the Inca looking upward towards the sky, with the largest peak, Huayna Picchu (meaning Young Peak), representing his nose. The peak is also known as the "hitching post of the sun."
