Abu Dhabi (Arabic: أبو ظبي‎ transliteration: abū ẓābī, literally Father of gazelle) is the capital and second most populous city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), after Dubai. It is also the seat of government of the emirate of Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Arabian Gulf from the central western coast. Approximately 1.45 million people live in Abu Dhabi as of 2008, of whom 80% were expatriates. One of the world's largest producers of oil, Abu Dhabi has actively attempted to diversify its economy in recent years through investments in financial services and tourism. Abu Dhabi is ruled by Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is also the President of the UAE.
Parts of Abu Dhabi were settled in the 3rd millennium BC and its early history fits the nomadic herding and fishing pattern typical of the broader region. Modern Abu Dhabi traces its origins to the rise of an important tribal confederation, the Bani Yas, in the late 18th century, which also subsequently assumed control of the town of Dubai. In the 19th century the Dubai and Abu Dhabi branches parted ways.

Into the mid-20th century, the economy of Abu Dhabi continued to be sustained mainly by camel herding, production of dates and vegetables at the inland oases of Al Ain and Liwa Oasis, and fishing and pearl diving off the coast of Abu Dhabi city, which was occupied mainly during the summer months. Most dwellings in Abu Dhabi city were, at this time constructed of palm fronds (barasti), with the wealthier families occupying mud huts. The growth of the cultured pearl industry in the first half of the twentieth century created hardship for residents of Abu Dhabi as pearls represented the largest export and main source of cash earnings.

In 1939, Sheikh Shakhbut Bin-Sultan Al Nahyan granted petroleum concessions, and oil was first found in 1958. At first, oil money had a marginal impact. A few lowrise concrete buildings were erected, and the first paved road was completed in 1961, but Sheikh Shakbut, uncertain whether the new oil royalties would last, took a cautious approach, preferring to save the revenue rather than investing it in development. His brother, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, saw that oil wealth had the potential to transform Abu Dhabi. The ruling Al Nahyan family decided that Sheikh Zayed should replace his brother as ruler and carry out his vision of developing the country. On August 6, 1966, with the assistance of the British, Sheikh Zayed became the new ruler. [1]

With the announcement by the UK in 1968 that it would withdraw from the Persian Gulf area by 1971, Sheikh Zayed became the main driving force behind the formation of the United Arab Emirates.

After the Emirates gained independence in 1971, oil wealth continued to flow to the area and traditional mud-brick huts were rapidly replaced with banks, boutiques and modern highrises.

The emirate of Abu Dhabi is located in the oil-rich and strategic United Arab Emirates and is an active member of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC). It borders with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (south) and the Sultanate of Oman (east). The emirate borders the emirate of Dubai to its northeast. In the north is the Arabian Gulf.

Abu Dhabi city is on an island located less than a quarter-kilometer from the mainland and is joined to the mainland by the Maqta and Mussafah Bridges. A third bridge, designed by Zaha Hadid, is currently under construction. Bridges connecting to Reem Island and Saadiyat Island are also under construction.

Most of Abu Dhabi is located on the island itself, but it has many suburbs on the mainland for example: the Khalifa Cities, Between Two Bridges, and Mussafah Residential.
Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan is the hereditary ruler of Abu Dhabi (UAE). He is the son of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first president of the United Arab Emirates.
Abu Dhabi is the wealthiest emirate of the UAE in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and per capita income. The average net worth for Abu Dhabi's 420,000 citizens is AED 62 million (US$ 17 million), and more than $1 trillion is invested worldwide in this city alone. The GDP per capita also reached $63,000 [2], which is far above the average income of the United Arab Emirates and which ranks third in the world after Luxembourg and Norway. Abu Dhabi is also planning many future projects sharing with the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) and taking 29% of all the GCC future plannings. The United Arab Emirates is a fast-growing economy: in 2006 the per capita income grew by 9%, providing a GDP per capita of $49,700 and ranking third in the world at Purchasing power parity. Abu Dhabi plays a large role in the world economy. Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), currently estimated at US$ 875 billion, is the world's wealthiest soverign fund, in terms of total asset value.

2030 Plan set to drive Abu Dhabi development, economy, and impact on global investment

ALDAR Properties PJSC, the renowned international property development company, attended the prestigious MIPIM exhibition held in Cannes, France. Taking its world-class developments Al Dana precinct on Al Raha Beach and the entertainment destination, YAS Island to the event, ALDAR raised awareness of its developments in Abu Dhabi, as well as contributing to the global awareness of the emirate.

The 2030 Plan announced by the UAE capital city Abu Dhabi in November 2007 set out guidelines for infrastructural plans in light of the massive development and expansion the emirate is set to experience. ALDAR has worked closely with the Urban Planning Council and its partners in Abu Dhabi such as Etihad, TDIC, ADTA to ensure that all of the visionary tourism destinations and developments are in-line with the overall vision of the Emirate.

"The impact of these developments to the world is what they have to offer to visitors, business, and residents. In this development phase it is critical to align with the government to ensure that infrastructure and urban planning is carefully planned, creating developments which compliment the existing surroundings," said Ronald S. Barrott, CEO ALDAR Properties. "Delivering residential and business areas that will attract global industries and financial institutions, is part of our contribution towards Abu Dhabi's next economic boom, and we take this responsibility very seriously."

The Al Dana precinct of Al Raha Beach is the commercial hub of the waterfront development. Attracting world business through its commercial offering, the creation of Al Dana is an integral step in the growth of the emirate as a global player. The Abu Dhabi World Trade Centre will contain 32,000 square metres of office space, set to attract a variety of multinational organizations. Abu Dhabi is currently growing exponentially economically, as the UAE's non-oil economy grew by approximately 10 per cent in real terms last year and more than 20 per cent in current prices to become the fastest growing sector in the six-nation Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC). This up and coming commercial hub in Abu Dhabi will benefit the regions economic growth which will have an impact on the overall global economy.

Already traffic to Abu Dhabi is on the rise, and the continued allure of setting up in Abu Dhabi is a testament to the effort of the emirate in attracting global players to the market, partly through the commitment to developing its infrastructure in line with overall urban development. The airport witnessed a total of 730,404 passengers in December 2007, a 40.4% increase over the 520,133 passengers realized in December 2006. The number of aircraft movements increased 19.9% during the same period, rising from 6,517 in December 2006 to 7,811.

With YAS Island, ALDAR's global tourism destination, the company has the advantage of creating theme parks with the latest technology. YAS Island will be home to the world's first Ferrari theme park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. In addition, the luxury destination will also be home to a Warner Bros theme park and a world class Formula One™ racetrack, which will be hosting the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix commencing in 2009.

"Abu Dhabi is setting the stage for massive influx of international commercial and tourism traffic to the emirate. Preparation to accommodate the growing status of capital city encompasses more than development, it also necessitates careful planning, strategy and timely executions of all of the various aspects to a maturing city and economy," concluded Ronald S. Barrott, CEO ADLAR Properties.

Fernando Botero, the most famous living Latin American artist, will display his Abu Ghraib paintings at the University of California, Berkeley. These 47 paintings and drawings belong to a long tradition of artistic statements against war and violence that include Goya's Caprichos and Picasso's Guernica.

Organized by the Center for Latin American Studies, these paintings have never been displayed in a public institution in the United States. The exhibit was "proposed to many museums in the U.S," according to the artist, but all declined to show it.

I, MUMIA ABU-JAMAL, declare:
1. I am the Petitioner in this action. If called as a witness I could and would testify to the following from my own personal knowledge:
2. I did not shoot Police Officer Daniel Faulkner. I had nothing to do with the killing of Officer Faulkner. I am innocent.
3. At my trial I was denied the right to defend myself, I had no confidence in my court-appointed attorney, who never even asked me what happened the night I was shot and the police officer was killed, and I was excluded from at least half the trial.
4. Since I was denied all my rights at my trial I did not testify. I would not be used to make it look like I had a fair trial.
5. I did not testify in the post-conviction proceedings in 1995 on the advice of my attorney, Leonard Weinglass, who specifically told me not to testify.
6. Now for the first time I have been given an opportunity to tell what happened to me in the early morning hours of December 9, 1981. This is what happened:
7. As a cabbie I often chose 13th and Locust Street because it was a popular club area with a lot of foot traffic.
8. I worked out of United Cab on the night of 12/9/81.
9. I believe I had recently returned from dropping off a fare in West Philly.
10. I was filling out my log when I heard some shouting.
11. I glanced in my rear view mirror and saw a flashing dome light of a police cruiser. This wasn't unusual.
12. I continued to fill out my log/trip sheet when I heard what sounded like gun shots.
13. I looked again into my rear view mirror and saw people running up and down Locust.
14. As I scanned I recognized my brother standing in the street staggering and dizzy.
15. I immediately exited the cab and ran to his scream.
16. As I came across the street I saw a uniformed cop turn toward me gun in hand, saw a flash and went down to my knees.
17. I closed my eyes and sat still trying to breath.
18. The next thing that I remember I felt myself being kicked, hit and being brought out of a stupor.
19. When I opened my eyes, I saw cops all around me.
20. They were hollering and cursing, grabbing and pulling on me. I felt faint finding it hard to talk.
21. As I looked through this cop crowd all around me, I saw my brother, blood running down his neck and a cop lying on his back on the pavement.
22. I was pulled to my feet and then rammed into a telephone pole beaten where I fell and thrown into a paddy wagon.
23. I think I slept until I heard the door open and a white cop in a white shirt came in cursing and hit me in the forehead.
24. I don't remember what he said much except a lot of "n-----s", "black motherfuckers" and what not.
24. I believe he left and I slept. I don't remember the wagon moving for a while and when it did for sometime.
25. I awoke to hear the driver speaking over the radio about his prisoner.
26. I was informed by the anonymous crackle on the radio that I was en route to the police administration building a few blocks away.
27. Then, it sounded like "I.D.'d as M-1" came on the radio band telling the driver to go to Jefferson Hospital.
28. Upon arrival I was thrown from the wagon to the ground and beaten.
29. I was beaten again at the doors of Jefferson.
30. Because of the blood in my lungs it was difficult to speak, and impossible to holler.
31. I never confessed to anything because I had nothing to confess to.
32. I never said I shot the policeman. I did not shoot the policeman.
33. I never said I hoped he died. I would never say something like that.
I declare under penalty of perjury under the laws of the United States that the above is true and correct and was executed by me on 3 May, 2001, at Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.

Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO), is a pioneering oil and gas producer whose operations date back to the 1950s, and are centred in the offshore areas of Abu Dhabi. Oil and gas production comes from two major fields Umm Shaif and Zakum. The crude is collected from these fields using giant steel structures called supercomplexes, and then transferred to Das Island, a nearby industrial base, for processing, storing and world export.

The first oil discovery in Abu Dhabi was made in 1958 in Umm Shaif and the first oil shipment exported from Abu Dhabi to the world market came out on July 4th, 1962 from the same field.
Over the years, the Company adopted the latest in drilling techniques and technologies, starting with vertical, then deviated and ultimately horizontal drilling. The advancement in drilling is necessitated by the need to optimise oil and gas production.

Professor Salman H. Abu-Sitta of the London-based Palestine Land Society gives a personal account of how he became a refugee in Palestine in 1948. Using data from his research, Abu-Sitta shows how over 600 Palestinian villages were systematically depopulated by the advancing Israeli forces, leaving many others dismembered by an arbitrary cease-fire line. With maps and demographic statistics, Abu-Sitta shows that, in effect, Zoinist policies were an ethnic cleasing campaign that resulted in a massive transfer of native Palestinians to the countries bordering Israel, where thousands remain within 100 miles from their original communities. The graduates of the SOA have proven relentless fighters to be sure; who are masters of the dark arts of torture, cruel interrogations, rape and mass murder. And who do they fight but their own people. To millions of people in Latin America the school is known by the popular name "La Escuela de Golpes"---the school of coups. There is scarcely an infamous massacre that can not be traced to its graduates. The Uraba massacre in Columbia. The El Mozote massacre, the rape and murders of four U.S. church women and the Jesuit massacres in El Salvador, the La Cantura massacre in Peru, and hundreds more. When the U.S. brays about a war on terrorism, there are millions in America to the south who snort in derision for they know another America which breeds state terrorism.
