Joel and a friend were watching TV and caught the trailer for The Golden Compass. Here's what they thought about it. Soup's on Fridays at 10pm on E!

Introduced in 1982, the GRiD Compass 1100 was likely the first commercial computer created in a laptop format and one of the first truly portable machines. With its rugged magnesium clamshell case (the screen folds flat over the keyboard), switching power supply, electro-luminescent display, non-volatile bubble memory, and built-in modem, the hardware design incorporated many features that we take for granted today. Software innovations included a graphical operating system, an integrated productivity suite including word processor, spreadsheet, graphics and e-mail. GRiD Systems Corporation, founded in 1979 by John Ellenby and his co-founders Glenn Edens and David Paulsen, pioneered many portable devices including the laptop, pen-based and tablet PC form factors.

Key members of the original GRiD engineering team -- Glenn Edens, Carol Hankins, Craig Mathias and Dave Paulsen -- share engineering stories from the Wild West of the laptop computer. Moderated by New York Times journalist John Markoff.

New Line Cinema has launched a partnership with World Wildlife Fund to help educate the public about the impact global warming is having on animals throughout the world.

In the new fantasy adventure film The Golden Compass, polar bears protect themselves with suits of armor. In the real world, threats to polar bears are not so easily abated. This majestic species is one of many in danger of extinction due to harsh changes in climate.

"Connecting WWF's real work to combat global climate change to the fantasy world portrayed in 'The Golden Compass' is a natural fit," said John Donoghue, senior vice president of World Wildlife Fund. "We hope the excitement generated by 'The Golden Compass' will draw attention to real issues impacting our planet and encourage people around the world to take action to protect and conserve nature."

"Polar bears are an iconic image in our film, and this is a very organic partnership for us," says Chris Carlisle, New Line's President of Domestic Marketing. "It adds an important layer to our campaign and we're thrilled to work with the World Wildlife Fund and support the work they do."

Through the partnership, you can log on to a special web site at http://worldwildlife.org/goldencompass to view a panoramic lineup of the animal spirits or "daemons" featured in the film, many of which are the same species that WWF works to protect in the real world. At the site you may show your support for WWF and its message of species protection by "adopting" a real-life animal whose species is featured in the film — including polar bears, snow leopards, and monkeys — through the site.

The partnership includes a public service announcement discussing the dangers global warming poses on the life of polar bears. The PSA, voiced by actress Dakota Blue Richards as her character Lyra can be viewed here.

A previously unheard recitation by the late Johnny Cash called "I Am The Nation" will be released Oct. 28 on Legacy Recordings' DVD/CD package Johnny Cash's America

In the spoken word track which was found in the iconic singer's personal belongings after his death in 2003 at the age of 71 Cash speaks poetically about America's diversity and the fundamentals of freedom.

The poignant words were originally a public relations advertisement written in 1955 for the Norfolk and Western Railway by Otto Whittaker.

"May I possess always the integrity, the courage and the strength to keep myself unshackled, to remain a citadel of freedom and a beacon of hope to the entire world," Cash says on the track.

A rep for the DVD/CD package, said "Johnny's oration of "I Am The Nation" from the film's soundtrack reminds us what our country stands for at a time when Americans seem more divided than ever."

The Heart Sutra

Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, meditating deeply on Perfection of Wisdom, saw clearly that the five aspects of human existence are empty*, and so released himself from suffering. Answering the monk Sariputra, he said this:

Body is nothing more than emptiness,
emptiness is nothing more than body.
The body is exactly empty,
and emptiness is exactly body.

The other four aspects of human existence --
feeling, thought, will, and consciousness --
are likewise nothing more than emptiness,
and emptiness nothing more than they.

All things are empty:
Nothing is born, nothing dies,
nothing is pure, nothing is stained,
nothing increases and nothing decreases.

So, in emptiness, there is no body,
no feeling, no thought,
no will, no consciousness.
There are no eyes, no ears,
no nose, no tongue,
no body, no mind.
There is no seeing, no hearing,
no smelling, no tasting,
no touching, no imagining.
There is nothing seen, nor heard,
nor smelled, nor tasted,
nor touched, nor imagined.

There is no ignorance,
and no end to ignorance.
There is no old age and death,
and no end to old age and death.
There is no suffering, no cause of suffering,
no end to suffering, no path to follow.
There is no attainment of wisdom,
and no wisdom to attain.

The Bodhisattvas rely on the Perfection of Wisdom,
and so with no delusions,
they feel no fear,
and have Nirvana here and now.

All the Buddhas,
past, present, and future,
rely on the Perfection of Wisdom,
and live in full enlightenment.

The Perfection of Wisdom is the greatest mantra.
It is the clearest mantra,
the highest mantra,
the mantra that removes all suffering.

This is truth that cannot be doubted.
Say it so:

Gaté,
gaté,
paragaté,
parasamgaté.
Bodhi!
Svaha!

Which means...

Gone,
gone,
gone over,
gone fully over.
Awakened!
So be it!

* Emptiness is the usual translation for the Buddhist term Sunyata (or Shunyata). It refers to the fact that no thing -- including human existence -- has ultimate substantiality, which in turn means that no thing is permanent and no thing is totally independent of everything else. In other words, everything in this world is interconnected and in constant flux. A deep appreciation of this idea of emptiness thus saves us from the suffering caused by our egos, our attachments, and our resistance to change and loss.

Therefore by reciting Amitabha Buddha's name, Buddhist followers hope that they will be born in this Pure Land after their lives on earth.
