ABSTRACT

IGlobal online services at Amazon, eBay, Myspace, YouTube, or Google serve millions of customers with tens of thousands of servers located throughout the world. At this scale, components fail continuously and it is difficult to maintain a consistent state while hiding failures from the application. Peer-to-peer protocols provide availability by replicating services among peers, but they are mostly limited to write-once/read-many data sharing. To extend them beyond the typical file sharing, the support of fast transactions on distributed hash tables (DHTs) is an important yet missing feature.

We will present a distributed key/value store based on a DHT that supports consistent writes. Our system comprises three layers:

- a DHT layer for scalable, reliable access to replicated data,
- a transaction layer to ensure data consistency in the face of concurrent write operations,
- an application layer with an extremely high access rate.
For the application layer, we selected a distributed, scalable Wiki with full transaction support. We will show that our Wiki outperforms the public Wikipedia in terms of served page requests per second and
we will discuss how the development of the distributed code benefited from the use of Erlang.

Thorsten Schütt is a senior researcher with the Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) and a co-founder of onScale solutions GmbH. He received a CS diploma with distinction in 2002 from the Technical University Berlin. Since then he works as a research staff member in the Computer Science Research Department at ZIB and participates in several EU projects like GridLab, XtreemOS and Selfman. He is the principal system architect of the scalable, transactional key/value store at ZIB. His research interests include distributed data management, scalable grid systems, p2p algorithms and self-managing transactional
storage systems.

Nikesh Arora, President of EMEA Operations speaks about how the internet is changing marketing at the Marketing Society Annual Conference in London.

This is the official press launch for Loose Change Final Cut. The film is the third and final version of the most downloaded and watched movie in Internet history. The movie explores the events of September 11th, 2001 challenging the official story as put forward by the Bush administration and the mainstream media.

It was hosted by Emily Buchanan of BBC World Affairs and features both the director of the film, Dylan Avery, and the UK distributor Tim Sparke, of Mercury Media. It also features guest speaker Gordon Ross, a mechanical engineer who features in the new version of the film.

Regarding Smart Film, its breakthrough feature is that the customer (a level like as distributor, agent or contractor after two to three days of installation training) can directly, easily, and repetitively adhere Smart Film on currently existing glasses or new designed-in glass projects, e.g. hotel bathrooms and living rooms, conference rooms, CEO/executive offices, building façade glass wall systems, public toilets, etc. In addition, Smart Film is different from traditional privacy glasses which need a longer delivery lead time for tailor-made sizes, higher installation cost, higher transportation cost due to heavier weight of two glass panels, and more complex project management for any current existing window glasses at sites.

Smart-Film under opaque status (power-off mode) is able to deliver high projection quality and larger project area (e.g. 100”, 160”, 320”, and etc. by a simple sheet by sheet and edge-to-edge expansion) upon the quality of LCD projector (LCD type projector, preferred, not DLP type) by a way of rear-end projection to glass walls.

So, it would be a fantastic and innovative tool for projection advertising inside shopping malls, theaters, churches, shops, train/metro/subway station lobbies, airport terminal lobbies, etc. around a whole day as well as on building façade glass walls during the night.

In summary, Smart Film can be directly attached on glass and any transparent materials. You can use it for electric curtain and projection screen, It can vary the daylight transmission controlled by building automation.
Smart Film is green building material which can block sun heat and UV, and is proof against water and smudge.
