A protest over the fatal shooting by a BART police officer of an unarmed black man mushroomed into several hours of violence Wednesday night as demonstrators smashed storefronts and cars, set several cars ablaze and blocked streets in downtown Oakland.
The roving mob expressed fury at police and frustration over society's racial injustice. Yet the demonstrators were often indiscriminate, frequently targeting the businesses and prized possessions of people of color.
They smashed a hair salon, a pharmacy and several restaurants. Police in riot gear tried to control the crowd, but some people retreated along 14th Street and bashed cars along the way.
The mob smashed the windows at Creative African Braids on 14th Street, and a woman walked out of the shop holding a baby in her arms.
"This is our business," shouted Leemu Topka, the black owner of the salon she started four years ago. "This is our shop. This is what you call a protest?"
Wednesday night's vandalism victims had nothing to do with the shooting death by a BART police officer of Oscar Grant on New Year's Day - but that did little to sway the mob.
"I feel like the night is going great," said Nia Sykes, 24, of San Francisco, one of the demonstrators. "I feel like Oakland should make some noise. This is how we need to fight back. It's for the murder of a black male."
Sykes, who is black, had little sympathy for the owner of Creative African Braids.
"She should be glad she just lost her business and not her life," Sykes said. She added that she did have one worry for the night: "I just hope nobody gets shot or killed."
The protest had started calmly shortly after 3 p.m. at the Fruitvale Station in Oakland, where BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle shot 22-year-old Grant of Hayward a week ago. BART shut down the station well into the evening commute, although the demonstration there was peaceful.
However, shortly after nightfall, a group of roughly 200 protesters split off and headed toward downtown Oakland, prompting the transit agency to close the Lake Merritt and 12th Street stations. The group wreaked havoc through much of downtown, drawing hundreds of police in riot gear. It wasn't until roughly 10:40 p.m that police clamped down on the mob, arresting dozens who were cornered near the Paramount Theatre, and bringing an end to the mayhem.
Earlier in the evening, Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums met the mob on 14th Street, urging calm and leading them on a walk to City Hall, where he gave a speech.
"I sense your frustration," he told the crowd. "I understand that you've lost confidence in a process because you've seen what you believe is a homicide ... But listen to me, we are a community of people. We are civilized people. We are a nation of laws.
Dellums told protesters that he had asked the Oakland Police Department to investigate the shooting. "I have asked Oakland police to engage in a fair, parallel investigation, the way you'd investigate any homicide in Oakland," he said. "If that leads to an arrest, that's what it would lead to."
"I'm asking people to disperse," the mayor said to the couple hundred people in the crowd. "Let's leave in a spirit of peace."
But soon after, a man shouted "that's the modern day lynching" and the mob quickly continued its rampage, smashing at least seven storefronts on 17th street between Franklin and Webster streets. They also smashed eight cars, including four belonging to the City of Oakland.
Other protesters marched on BART's 12th Street Station about 7 p.m., prompting the transit agency to close the downtown hub station even as it was reopening the Lake Merritt and Fruitvale stations.
The mob blocked the intersection of 14th and Broadway, near the downtown BART station entrance. As police put on helmets and gas masks and stood in a line formation, some demonstrators held signs that read, "Your idea of justice?" and "Jail Killer Cops."

No one ever need worry about being harassed. This is because a person who tries to harass someone always harms his own situation much more than anyone else.
This is true for any kind of wrongdoing someone may engage in, whether it be lying, stealing or cheating. That person doing it harms himself more.
No one need ever needs to be scared about being harassed, for this reason. Just stay good yourself and dont harass anyone, and you will be fine.
Even if the harasser doesn't get caught or get in trouble, still he if he engages in nastiness and wrongdoing he will always harm his own situation much more than anyone else.
A person who lies or tries to harass people becomes stupider and unable to do things properly. The lies he speaks confuse himself more than anyone else, because they are coming from him. He will find it very hard to build or fix things. He confuses his own self more than anyone else.
A harasser will find it much harder to use a computer and do technical things, or to play music and write songs or be truly creative in any way.

I got this corset the other day. Such a pretty thing and so easy to wear. I got creative as I do on the dark of the moon time and made a couple of Jacky O inspired garments; plus a jacket that isn't finished quite yet.
In honour of all that is pink and girly.
Oh. Yeh. I figured I'd put the sideways down the tricky incline bit in for a laugh.

From http://www.ImprovEverywhere.com, a little league baseball game is turned into a major league event. All players, coaches, and parents do not know what is happening. We worked with the league commissioner to get the kids' names and access to the field to setup our equipment the morning of the game. He was the only one in on it. NBC Sports worked with us and got us the jumbotron and the blimp.
This is one of over 70 different missions Improv Everywhere has executed over the past six years in New York City. Filo and Peri are two of the hottest up and coming producer and dj talents in the biz. 'Anthem', the new single by Filo & Milo is a wonderful combination of smashing beats and very emotional lyrics and melody.
This is an anthem for the girl that got away
This is an anthem for the world of yesterday
This is an anthem for the rebel of my youth
This is an anthem for the risk of loving you...
Enjoy the video, and this interview by EventVibe with the talented duo.
Eventvibe founder, Tim Ortiz, was able to spend time with Dominic Filopei (Filo) & Bo Pericic (Peri) during a recent tour to promote their latest CD, "Crowd Control."
Tim: Where are you both from in New York?
Filo: I was born and raised in the Bronx.
Peri: I'm from Westchester, NY and our studio is in the Bronx.
Tim: How long have you been in the business?
Filo: I've been involved with music since I was 5 years old, but I've really only been in the business about four years.
Peri: We've been in the business for almost 4 years now, but I have been working on music for as long as I can remember.
Tim: How did you get in the business?
Filo: We officially got in the business when Armin Van Buuren signed our first record in 2003.
Peri: Yeah - we got the call on July 17th, 2003 and Armin wanted to sign our record 'Elevation'! It's an easy date to remember because it happened to be on my 18th birthday - what a great present!
Tim: Bo, has your age ever gotten in the way of your goals as a producer/dj?
Filo: Not really. It's a little harder to have people take you seriously when you're young, but I don't mind earning respect. I would say that being a producer/dj has made me grow up quicker because of all the things we've had to deal with in this business.
Tim: Dom, a couple of your tracks have been picked up by Paul Van Dyk's label, Vandit. Tell us about this please.
Peri: We've been very fortunate to continuously have our work recognized by the top names in the scene. Last year Paul Van Dyk picked up a tune we made with California based rock band Fisher called 'Ordinary Moment'. The record was really successful for Vandit and they asked us for more. Our latest production 'Anthem' is a collaboration with New York based rock singer and good friend Eric Lumiere. It's catching a lot of buzz and people are already singing it at all our shows - we're really excited about that! Just last week at the Winter Music conference Paul van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren, and Ferry Corsten all dropped it.
Tim: When you are doing studio work, please explain the creative process and who tends to get involved more, in what areas.
Filo: We are involved in all the areas equally. The case with many duos is that one acts mainly as the producer while the other is more of a DJ. In our case everything is split equally and it really helps us move forward quicker. Sometimes one of us will put in more work on a certain track but at the end, everything we do is 50/50. The creative process is pretty spontaneous and since we have two systems at our studio, we bang out ideas pretty quickly. It's almost like an assembly line sometimes - while one of us is finishing the new track, the other is coming up with ideas for the next!
Tim: Where does your musical influence and inspiration come from?
Filo: My inspiration comes from the rock legends and their ability to be at the front of the masses and have such a musical and cultural influence. As a DJ, I'm starting do the same thing and I have not had a more gratifying experience than that.
Peri: My dad has always been into electronic music and I grew up listening to electronic music pioneers such as Jean Michelle Jarre, Kraftwerk, etc. That really made an impact on me! I have an extremely close family and my parents are a continuous source of inspiration. The opportunities I've been presented throughout my entire life is a direct result of their hard work, and that inspires me to work hard every day. It's hard not to be inspired when such an amazing family, girlfriend, and music partner/best friend (Domenick) surrounds me.
Tim: What should we expect from Filo and Peri in the next year?
Filo: You can expect Filo and Peri in a city near you!
Peri: An artist album later this year and some exciting gigs! We're also starting to work with Paul Van Dyk and Vandit much more closely.
