"is very old. Approximately 400 million years ago, this area was covered by a shallow tropical sea teeming with life in the form of plant-like animals, crustaceans, living corals and mollusks. It would have looked much like the present-day Great Barrier Reef of Australia. When the sea began to dry up, the minerals dissolved in it became more and more concentrated. Magnesium in the water was absorbed into the limestone, which then became a harder, slightly different sort of rock, called dolomite."

Salvador (in full, São Salvador da Baía de Todos os Santos is a city on the northeast coast of Brazil and the capital of the Northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia. Salvador is also known as Brazil's capital of happiness due to its easygoing population and countless popular outdoor parties, including its street carnival. The first colonial capital of Brazil, the city is one of the oldest in the country and in the New World; for a long time, it was also known as Bahia, and appears under that name (or as Salvador da Bahia, Salvador of Bahia so as to differentiate it from other Brazilian cities of the same name) on many maps and books from before the mid-20th century. Salvador is located on a small, roughly triangular peninsula that separates Todos os Santos Bay from the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Salvador is a major export port, lying at the heart of the Recôncavo Baiano, a rich agricultural and industrial region encompassing the northern portion of coastal Bahia. The local terrain is diverse ranging from flat to rolling to hills and low mountains.
A particularly notable feature is the escarpment that divides Salvador into the Cidade Alta ("Upper Town") and the Cidade Baixa ("Lower Town"), the former some 85 m (275 ft) above the latter, with the city's cathedral and most administrative buildings standing on the higher ground. An elevator (the first installed in Brazil), known as Elevador Lacerda has connected the two sections since 1873, having since undergone several upgrades.

Il faro di Biarritz, (Biarritz è un comune francese situato nel dipartimento dei Pirenei atlantici nella regione dell'Aquitania), la cui struttura è situata sulla falesia di pointe Saint-Martin (punta di Saint Martin). Questo sperone roccioso costituisce una vera e propria frontiera tra la costa sabbiosa in direzione nord, che prosegue per alcune centinaia di chilometri fino all'estrema punta della Gironda, e le scogliere dei Paesi baschi a sud.
Il faro è stato costruito tra il 1830 e il 1834 a cura dell'architetto M. Viennois. Le sue fondamenta, che poggiano sull'estremità occidentale del promontorio, sprofondano fino a 5 metri nel sottosuolo roccioso (usanza dell'epoca per evitare eventuali inclinazioni della torre). La costruzione è costituita da una torre conica bianca che sovrasta i locali macchine dell'impianto, nonché la vecchia abitazione dei guardiani.
Il faro è stato completamente automatizzato nel 1980.
243 scalini che congiungono il pian terreno alla sua sommità, consentono di giungere ad un'altezza di circa 80 metri s.l.m. la quale offre uno spettacolare panorama nelle belle giornate: dal sottostante abitato di Biarritz, al litorale aquitano e basco, fino alla maestosità dei Pirenei. In particolare a nord è visibile la valle dell'Adour; a est i piccoli villaggi e la cattedrale di Bayonne; a sud i centri di Hendaye e Saint Jean de Luz; a ovest... l'immensità dell'Atlantico...
Nelle sue vicinanze è presente il golf du Phare che è un campo da golf, costruito dagli inglesi nel 1888.

By the Eastern Continental Divide, on the Blue Wall escarpement running through northern Polk County, North Carolina near Lake Lure, is the "World's Edge" - a view point and gathering spot for generations, 1,500 feet above the valley floor.
Steve Marlowe's ancesters lived on these slopes and bottoms - he and his cousins roamed all over these hills.
As we walk the rugged cliffs and enjoy the beautiful scenery, Steve recalls some history, lore and legend.
Looking north towards Lake Lure and Chimney Rock,we then walk on the old wagon road route from Polk Co.(at old Bailytown) up to Edneyville and Hendersonville.

This clip was taken during my little weekend escape to Owen Sound. My good friend Yolande and I hopped into the car early Saturday morning and took a nice country drive up to Georgian Bay. We drove through Collingwood, Craigleith and Thornbury before we made a stop in the historic town Meaford which has a nice waterfront and a decent main street with Victorian townhouses dating back to the 1880s. We continued our adventure to Owen Sound which is a beautiful town located right where the Sydenham River flows into Georgian Bay. The Niagara Escarpment also goes right through town.

We checked out the waterfront area near the community centre where a triathlon was being held and the kid's run just got underway. Then we looked for the tourist info which was closed for lunch and headed for a late breakfast to the local Boot & Blade Restaurant. The customer service rep in the Tourism Office was extremely helpful and even made himself available for a little on-camera interview. So equipped with lots of local knowledge we embarked on the Historic Downtown Walking Tour where we enjoyed the many Victorian heritage buildings and the picturesque Sydenham River that runs right through town. The city has also put up many flower boxes all over the place that make the city more attractive.

Our next adventure was a very rugged hike that started at Harrison Park, a large public park with ponds, pedal boats, minigolf, a restaurant, a playground and other facilities, which took us up and down some steep hills along the Niagara Escarpment to picturesque Inglis Falls where we climbed around the interesting limestone rock formations beside the river for a while. We then hiked back up to the road, picked up our car and drove to our accommodation for the night: the Garden House B&B in Williamsford, about 25 minutes south of Owen Sound. Maria, the owner, welcomed us in her gorgeous house. She has 3 rooms available for B&B guests and we took up two which she gave us generously for the price of one. The house has huge panorama windows and the waning daylight just flooded the place. The walls are adorned with Maria's watercolour paintings and well-cared for plants grow throughout the whole house. Our bathroom was also very spacious and featured a claw-foot tub.

Hungry from our excursion we asked her for advice for local food and she sent us to the Kettle Restaurant 10 minutes up the street where we had a filling meal. Yolande enjoyed her salmon filet and my dinner was okay. Tired from all the hiking we dropped into our comfortable beds and I fell asleep right away. In the morning I had a chance to interview Maria (the article will be written shortly, you'll find it on www.travelandtransitions.com in the Interview section), and found out that she's a very interesting person and a real survivor. She then fixed breakfast for us, a delicious omelette with home-baked multigrain bread, fresh yoghurt with home-made jams, and fresh tomatoes from the garden. We were ready to head back to the city, packed our bags and thanked her for the great hospitality. She even gave us some free home-baked bread to take home. Originally we had wanted to stop in Guelph for a bit of sightseeing, but since it was raining we went straight back to Toronto and decided that we needed to do another country excursion soon. These video clips were taken during my driving tour around the Niagara Escarpment on July 18, 2007. As much as I love Toronto, I occasionally need to get out into the country and enjoy the beauty and serenity of Ontario's rural areas. So at 9 am I met my friend Karel who is a local expert of the area and we set off on a discovery of Halton Region Conservation areas: we started with Mount Nemo Conservation Area, stopped in Lowville, and then admired the Iroquois longhouses in Crawford Lake. After a brief stop in the Hilton Falls Conservation Area we explored the Victorian-era Main Street of Milton as well as its scenic Mill Pond.

From here we drove on towards the Spencer Gorge Conservation Area where we enjoyed the view of two waterfalls: Tew's Falls and Webster's Falls. We also hiked out to Dundas Peak, and the rocky platform with its sheer vertical drops provided a stunning view of Dundas and the City of Hamilton.
