 Flexifoil Ion3 (Review) 03:22We were fortunate enough to take out the new 2008 Ion3, and right from the start as we were going through the setup we could tell the kite had a lot of standout features. One was the fact that we could change our line length by adding or removing the line attachments in a matter of seconds. Another was that the bridle on the kite was short and compact which helps prevent the bridle from getting tangled around the wingtips. Down at the bar, the 5th line travels through the center of the depower system and chicken loop to below the bar where it is easy to access. The 5th line bridle can also be adjusted to attach to the leading edge at different points which allows you to fine tune to your personal sweet spot. The bar itself is small in diameter and is easy to grab in moments of struggle. Though this kite is a SLE it has a lot more features of a C-kite than a traditional bow kite. The smooth range in power and depower with the chicken loop was great. This helped in the gusts as it wouldn't kill all the power in the kite when you went to depower. If you need 100% depower, you can let go of the bar and let it sit out on the chicken loop. With the 5th line, relaunching was quick and easy. The Ion3 definitely has a little more lift and hangtime than pop when it comes to freestyle and would be excellent in the waves because of its smooth turning and stability. It's easy to feel the bridle at work when you're flying on the beach as the kite stays rigid and holds its shape in inconsistent winds. There were some jumps were the kite would lose all of its power on the landing if your timing wasn't right. However, this was easy to fix; all we had to do was be a little more aggressive with the steering. The Ion3 is definitely a good kite for someone wanting to transition from a bow kite to a C-kite as it has the best of both worlds.
