My more fastidious readers must forgive me the attention-grabbing heading to this poem. Poets, like everyone else, must attempt to gain an ever wider audience for their productions! To write and to be unread is a forlorn occupation. This is the fourth section of my Hadrian & Antinous sequence that I have posted here. I hope it proves as popular as the previous three. Ave Antinoe! And his blessings upon the heads of all that read this!

Hadrian Remembers Antinous:
Our First Carnal Encounter

The rich interior world behind the eyelids
populates a summer afternoon.
Later - if not sometime very soon -
what was dream unfolds in the real world
(given that the world is real and not
a mere subjunction of the dream).
Unceasingly the everyday trails off
among the thick lianas of the mind.
The imagined perpetually merges with the real.

'Spiritual love seeks sexual expression'
- where did I read that?
My ba, my soul (psyche, butterfly,
glorious winged angel) attracted by the light,
the flame that lit his alabaster body,
spent itself in poetry and song,
fluttered like a moth about his flame,
hypnotised by that clear ray of being.

The moth is singed, is doomed, must surely die
less she escapes from light into the dark.
So my soul escaped into the body,
there found peace and pleasure and repose
upon his couch of flesh and in his open arms.

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

We had been out hunting.
After the hunt, he stripped.
I gazed upon that plenitude of flesh,
that luscious living cornucopia;
watched as what was godlike in the boy
glowed in living being there before me.
He stripped. Not shamelessly
but just to get out of his clothes,
simple as that, natural as that,
unhampered in his perfect poise and grace
by any base lascivious intention -
just to get out of his clothes,
to relish the cooling breeze
that crept along the forest floor
rustling among the brittle fallen leaves
like rippling water over pebble beds.
We had ridden so long and hard that day.

Birds in the forest sang. The insects danced
in sunlight. Then a sudden stillness came.
A wind, a gusting wind. Then still again
as if a storm were brewing. And yet no storm
disturbed the dreaming vision of the trees
communing with us as I gazed at him
and he unblinkingly gazed back at me
his eyes in the dim green twilight turned to gold.

He smiled at me. He was always smiling.
By now I think he knew I wanted him.
It was all quite natural, in the calm Greek way.
Not like those lascivious Latins
I had known at uncle Trajan's court,
had known, had had,
sucking their forefingers, showing their bums.

There was a way, a code. We behaved like men.
Not like men pretending to be women.
I know that that sounds prudish.
And yet it was so vital to me then
to act with circumspection.
I wanted him and not some common tart,
the simpering lads that hang around the army.

He loved as he hunted,
determinedly, with humour,
never losing sight of the fleeting quarry,
relaxed and natural with a smiling face;
with politeness and with foresight and with grace,
perfectly accomplished.
Had he done this before? I never asked.

He lay upon the forest floor
among fallen stalks and leaves and mossy earth
stretched out like a wary woodland faun
propped upon one elbow, watching me,
having just combed his hair,
his wonderful luxuriant curling hair -
the comb caught in the tresses, they were so thick.
Then he stretched his aching limbs and rested.
Yawning - how fondly I recall his graceful yawning! -
(Was there anything, in all the time I knew him,
that was not done with grace?)
half turning,
one smooth hand clasping the other above his head,
the lovely legs crossed sensuously at the knee -
a warm bow of flesh awaiting
the hand to draw it. And he smiled again, consenting.
(So doting and so fond, my grammar awry!)

Never man more smitten than myself.
Never longing more powerful than mine.
Never love more poised more calm than his.

The first kiss on those large and lovely lips
had in it the taste of nectar
Ganymede himself the cup, my page
Antinous.

Far off my men were setting up the camp
their voices echoed dampened through the wood
as my thigh slid between his strong smooth thighs
and forest creatures watched us from the trees
and mating butterflies thronged the heavy air
forming a canopy above our heads.

When he whispered 'Master' I silenced him
hating the word and meaning of the word
told him he was free to love or not.
Again he whispered 'Master' to annoy me,
all the laughter glinting in his eyes.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

When we walked back to the camp
the men were watching
smiling among themselves.
They envied me.
How could they help but envy me, the lover
of the loveliest boy in all Bithynia?

I have already posted two of the poems from my Antinous & Hadrian cycle. I have recently rewritten this poem, called First and Second Meetings, and here is the first part of the video. These poems first saw the light due to the Ecclesia Antinoi group on Yahoo and first appeared on their webpages. My thanks therefore to them with brotherly salutations.

I.

He stood sucking his thumb, forearm resting
on the shoulder of a friend,
his free hand on his hip half insolent,
nonchalant and in control,
his eyes shining from under luxuriant lashes,
a smile of sorts upon those luscious lips.
Greek marble personified, made flesh,
Castor and Pollux paired, Dioscuri,
children of Zeus and Leda,
both ephebes, and one a living god;
the raised and lowered flame:
his friend the latter
and of a coarse discoloured stone.
But he himself!
I half recoiled; I think I even staggered.
Love at first sight?
Yes, of course it was.

Silence overwhelmed the noisy world.
Incarnation and epiphany.
The line of his jaw, his watching eyes,
his mouth,
the multiplex curves and concaves of his form,
the mellifluous whole chanting the open steppe,
some fierce hard horseman ravishing
the Bithynian genetrix generations before;
whence the line had mellowed, melded, ripened
into this almost perfect sun-warmed form.

I asked his name, hardly remembering my own.
'I am called Antinous,' he said,
his voice high and bright and still unbroken,
broad chest thrust forward,
kilt proudly swinging
as he half turned toward me, as if dancing.

The dowdy friend looked on and sniggered,
a knowing youth no doubt already familiar
with the grubbier aspects of human interaction.
Antinous frowned with displeasure, quite severe.
The lad caught the look of disapprobation,
calloused feet scuffing the dirt in embarrassment,
looking from him to me, the snigger fading.

My bodyguard rode up, breaking the spell
with chinking metal and hoofbeats suddenly stilled.
Both boys watched breathless, nothing now but boys,
the armour and the horses and the weapons
and the big tough men,
Antinous' mouth half open, large and ripe.
Already an aura flickered about his head
with its shining curling heavy mass of hair.

II.

Being busy, I forgot him; or,
I thought I had forgotten him.
But something led me back to the same district -
doubtless, the lure of the god, the elusive
scent of the divine which seems from childhood,
calling from the past, enticing to the future,
compulsive harbinger, trumpeting summons
to fulfil the fated destiny.
My forgetfulness had been itself a sign.

So later, not too later, back I went
with my sweaty unwashed cavalry,
my lumbering, unattractive troops,
drawn by the radiance of divinity,
the sweetness of infinity,
back to my destiny. And there he was,
upon the field of exercise,
naked perfection, glistening with oil,
chanting a Spartan warsong. And his voice!
The song within the song! The shining limbs!
The flying hair! White teeth in the open mouth!
The attitude! Leant forward with his sword in hand,
the imitation shield a disc of painted wood,
ready to repulse the coming foe, all the while
chanting lustily, the one and only...the pure ephebe,
youthful Mars and Apollo in one shape.
My heart, my lungs, my loins were in my throat;
the tears ran down my face.

My entourage was with me. I addressed him,
amazed at my composure (put on like a diadem),
every inch the emperor, apart from the telltale
wetness of my cheeks. Inwardly, on my knees.
I asked him where he had learnt that wonderful song.
He smiled and bowed. 'My master taught it me,
it lifts the spirit and inspires the flesh.'
This in perfect Greek. What other language
should the Godhead speak?
'Come to me later. Teach me the words of the song,'
I commanded. He bowed again, quite unafraid.

The courtiers spoke with him as I passed on,
trembling very slightly, and amazed
at my own perturbation. What was this?

Another from my poetic sequence concerning the Emperor Hadrian and his Bithynian lover. Here we see them together in Alexandria and Canopus. The music is from Gustav Holst's suite 'The Perfect Fool.'

Antinous and Hadrian : Alexandria and Canopus

Lights upon the water, flutes and sistra,
floating pleasure-barges, palaces
beside the dim canal.

Summon up once more those shadowed walls
summon up once more that sun-baked brick
summon up that fantastic brazen sea.

The delta a moving sheet of molten silver
the boat a burning ladle suspended
from the muted dome of the leaden sky
into a crucible of shimmered heat
wherein we must bake and burn
and slowly wither
at the hands of fire and water and air.
The city when it appeared
was like a sunken mass of glowing coals
the islands fiery embers
in the heat-haze of the river.

Who has not seen his private dream
his most elaborate fantasy of love
mirrored in these symbolic waters?
The emperor's arm was round Antinous
as they glided to the landing stage
hidden behind their silken purple curtains.
'Welcome to Alexandria' he said
as he kissed the boy.

The city stands at the precarious wavering edge
where land and water combine
and sandbanks daily shift;
where sudden visions and overwhelming ecstacies
cast down the solid foundation
teetering on the razor's edge
dividing time from eternity
in one huge wash.

In the magic library
illuminated papyri
touched by aesthetic trembling hands
burst the grasp of temporality
blaze before the emperor's initiate eyes.
Across the waters of the echoing canal
you may hear those songs and psalms
sung here for a thousand years
in praise of great Osiris, Isis, Seth.

Antinous' deep eyes are turned to watch
Canopean revellers entranced
by wine and sex and fragrant blossom
the scent of Egyptian spices on the air
floating down the blue canal
to a long evening's revelry
his lovely limbs enswathed in a spangled veil.

'She will be treated with respect'
the emperor later wrote,
remembering Alexandria.
'Let no hands divorced from piety
approach her firm yet fragile sensuality.
Breathe softly on that flickering flame.
Watch in the magic mirror
the features of the acolyte transformed
worshipping her triumphant strength
upon his shapely trembling knees
(so kneeled the beautiful youth).
Accept what she most bountifully gives;
enter the sentient flame;
in a fiery conflagration
shoot across those mystic dancing waters.

'Alexandria! Alexandria!
Consummate mistress of the world of form,
perfect dream founded in reality
where he and I became a single living entity.
You stand at the edge of chaos
you tamed the beasts of Canopus
you paid the flesh its due.
You dance upon the depth
you leap the seething gulf of nescience
the blight is held beyond your boundaries.
In each others arms and in your arms
we fixed our longings
in one pure marble form
and made our love a deathless living thing.'

The Emperor Hadrian and his younger Bithynian lover Antinous at the beginning of their voyage up the Nile. Antinous of course was later deified and became the subject of an intensive cult after his death in the river a short time later. I have personified the Nile god Hapi as a hippopotamus.

HADRIAN AND HIS GOD

Massed black coiling snakes upon the surface,
the power of the water was intense.
Not sensing the deep danger, they entwined
in moonlight, great Caesar of the Romans
and his lad. Glittering Nile was calling
as only moving water calls. Spirits
of wind and wave were drawing, onward onward
under a bridge of stars (bright reflected
Heaven) tireless eddies of the dragging stream.

Along night's luminous margin
the half sleeping emperor and his love
moved with the river's music as,
limbs entwined and mouth to mouth, they lay
intoxicated, breathing each the other's breath;
stirring at midnight to make new love;
and secretly again at silvery morning
dutiful to the voice of Venus's son.

(And later, and much later
the widower recalled with many tears
the sight of Antinous' body when the moon,
moving to declension, illumined her new Endymion;
whitening his shapely sun tanned length,
mound muscle and thickly tousled hair,
with glowing beams and rippling luscious highlights
along the breathing grace of flesh and fleece.)

From the palace balcony at dawn, again
they heard the calling of the river
where the hippo Hapi fleered and floundered
enormously, heavily playful, noisily
showering fecundity (such his nature)
on harem and inferiors alike,
snorting like a bull, black lord of Nilus.

Ra-Horakhty, Phosphor, Morning Star,
great Aten in his rising, one after the other
(the emperor polymath and multi-lingual)
burst the ridges of the eastern mountains.
Dawn dawn whatever we may call him
bringing always light and brightened hope
even to the dying and the doomed.

So through riven river mist the first lights burned
and Antinous felt the vapour on his body
raising his arms to the solar disc
Heaven's bright hunter falcon
bringer of dearth and drought as well as life.
And when the mist cleared hailed the risen sun
standing beside his master in warm sunlight
hearing the chorus of the river birds.
