The military wing of Hamas has launched a rare suicide attack on Gaza's border with Israel.

It came as a controversial meeting between Hamas officials and Jimmy Carter, the former US president, was concluding in Syria.

At least 13 Israeli soldiers were wounded, and three Palestinian fighters were reported to be killed.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak invited Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leaders to Cairo on Wednesday for separate talks. The meetings were called in an effort to resolve the political crisis caused by the opening of the Gaza border by militants last week. Barriers had been blown up by Hamas in an attempt to provide relief from the blockade and embargo of the Gaza Strip.

Egyptian forces have attempted to close the border with Gaza, breached by Hamas days earlier, but Hamas fighters used a bulldozer to keep the border open.

Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowalnd, reporting from the Gazan side of the border, watched the events unfold.

Tired of years of endemic corruption, Palestinian women are turning their backs on Fatah and supporting Hamas. But having voted for change, the pressure is now on Hamas to deliver.

When Nahida Sleibi's husband was injured, Hamas was the only organisation who came to her help. "Hamas is able to reach out to women through financial assistance", explains politician Intisar Al-Wazir. It runs a network of schools and hospitals which have a reputation for being efficient and corruption free. But while its social policies won it the female vote, rumours Hamas plans to implement Sharia Law have alienated some women. Others are worried about the financial implications of its rigid foreign policy. As Nuha states: "We're concerned the international community will reject us and things like petrol will be refused to us."

Are we witnessing a new political movement in the Middle East? The pressure is now on Hamas to transform itself into a recognised legitimate government.

"It's like a big political Tsunami hitting the whole region", states Palestinian Dr Iyad Saraj. Ten years of failures have left many despondent with the political process. "Jewish settlements are expanding, corruption is getting worse", despairs former Fatah supporter, Omar Shaker. In comparison to Fatah, Hamas is seen as clean and uncorrupt. Despite its involvement in violence, its elevation to a legitimate, elected political party could be the start of a new direction for the region. As Sharon's former security advisor states: "These gentlemen are serious people. We can have common ground."

A Mickey Mouse look-alike named Farfur is teaching Palestinian children the ABCs of terror on Hamas' official television station, Al-Aqsa TV.

"Instead of being entertained, they're being indoctrinated," Itamar Marcus, the director of Palestinian Media Watch, told FOX News.

The message seems to be working. Poems and songs submitted by young viewers contain violent imagery. "Rafah sings 'Oh, oh,'" one caller says as Farfur mimes carrying a rifle. "Its answer is an AK-47."
