Five-year-old Gigi Zinkel and her mom Laurie were shopping at a Chicago store when a boy pushed Gigi into a wall filled with metal display hooks.

He went and pushed her into the hook that was sticking straight out. She started screaming, Laurie Zinkel said. "You could see there was a hole that went right through her lip and her gum.

It did hurt. There was blood everywhere, Gigi Zinkel said.

The National Safety Council cautions unprotected display hooks at eye level or below can be extremely dangerous.

The ABC15 Investigators uncovered 70 injury cases in North America. A Canadian boy was injured in 2002 when a display hook pierced his brain. In 2003, a Texas woman was hospitalized after she fell onto a hook, puncturing her eye.

Here in the Valley, the ABC15 Investigators found stores using hazardous display hooks.

The Target at Tempe Marketplace used unprotected hooks to display jewelry.

At the Marshalls on 16th Street and Camelback in Phoenix, our undercover video showed metal display hooks jutting out of a wall used to hang toys well within reach of children playing in the area.

At a Biltmore area Michaels Arts and Crafts store, we saw dozens of hooks that were sharp to the touch used to display beads and scrapbooking materials.

Of the dozen local stores we visited, ten displayed unprotected metal hooks at or below eye level.

There is a simple solution. Stores can instead use a curved, looped or plastic guarded hook to protect shoppers from injuring themselves.

Safety engineer Larry Dinoff published a study about display hook injuries.

It's relatively simple to fix simply by using hooks that are not dangerous, Dinoff said. This is a problem that's just not being properly resolved."

At all the stores tested we found safe hooks being used, sometimes hanging across the aisle from the unsafe hooks.

While the Target at Tempe Marketplace used unprotected hooks to display jewelry, they also utilized guarded hooks in the toy department.

So, why aren't the safer hooks being used through out all the stores we tested?

In a statement to ABC15, Michaels Stores, Inc. said:

Michaels strives to create a safe and pleasurable shopping experience for all our customers. As a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), we respect their opinions and employ current safety recommendations customarily used throughout the retail industry. We appreciate being contacted and will review the matter, and if necessary will take steps we think are approporiate to protect our customers in our stores.

In a statement to ABC15, Target said:

Ensuring our guests' safety is Target's top priority. We're committed to creating safe shopping environments, so we design and build stores that meet or exceed safety regulations. We thank KNXV-TV for their interest in what Target does to keep guests safe and will take the information they shared with us into consideration as part of our ongoing assessment of our store design.

In a statement to ABC15, Marshalls said:

At Marshalls, we take the safety and well being of our customers and Associates very seriously. We thank you for bringing this matter to our attention, will look into it and take whatever steps we deem appropriate. Thank you.

Until standards regulating display hooks are created, experts said stores must be diligent about using the right hooks in the right areas.

Laurie Zinkel hopes Gigis story makes an impact, whatever the size.

My daughter was hurt by something that was totally unnecessary, Laurie Zinkel said.

And yeah, I was sucking pretty badly when I had to take the photos of all the females in the party.

And for some reason, a clip of the female pictures showed up when I was near the end of the level- I have NO idea what that was about.

....And the rockets.. oh boy... my aiming was so shaky there. The frames were down and I was having a hard time just keeping up with the helicopter at that point.
