Atlantis Dubai, a pink maze of arches that looms large on the citys skyline, includes an aquarium boasting 65,000 sea creatures, including sharks, eels and rays, a water park and a priceless sculpture made of 3,000 hand blown pieces of glass.

The hotels signature Bridge Suite, which features floor-to-ceiling views of Dubai, costs over £25,000 (Rs 20 lakh) a night. With such a select crowd at Atlantis, some will stay on for four days, there were issues over who would put up where.

Shah rukh Khan was allotted the super-exclusive suite suspended between the resorts two towers.

King Khan, who owns a resort on the Palm Islands and is said to be keen on the property business in the Emirates.

The superstar pipped the likes of acting great Robert Di Niro — a partner in the Nobu restaurant chain which has a site in the resort — and Oscar winner Charlize Theron, who had to make do with lesser suites.

Ignoring the depressing economic downturn, Dubai lit up its skies at the lavish launch of one of the world's most luxurious hotels. It was the most expensive party ever - costing £20m. Sky's Steve Hargrave was on the red carpet to welcome the stars.

The Palm Jumeirah increased Dubai's shoreline by 100 percent after work started on it in 2001.

It features resort hotels, homes, luxury shopping and entertainment.

Though the entire island officially opened Thursday, parts of it already opened weeks ago -- including the Atlantis, The Palm, a sister to the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas.

The Atlantis played host to the opening celebration Thursday night.

Stars including Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Robert De Niro, Janet Jackson and the Duchess of York were in attendance.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CNN) -- A huge man-made island shaped like a date palm tree opened Thursday off the coast of Dubai with a celebrity-studded gala and a three-day party.
When work on the island began, a team of Dutch engineers were employed to create the Palm by using a technique called rainbowing -- a vessel dredging sand from the seabed and spraying and piling it onto the desired area and into the requested shape.

On a warm day some kids are skating by the harbor. Instead of having a policeman on the corner of Linden and North in Reservoir Hill or some other drug ravaged corner the police have a man patrolling the harbor in a vehicle purchased for that purpose. He gets out of his vehicle and starts yelling at kids when he could be busting drug dealers in most any other part of Baltimore. The police will probably have his head for this but the real issue is why do we have cops going after kids at the Harbor while they could be out on corners busting the real bad guys. This story will probably make national news for all the wrong reasons. The sad thing is Baltimore is wasting tax dollars on far worse things than this. Mayor Dixon is now paying for homeless people stay in hotels in the county. In her state of the City address she implied that we are in for a budget crunch and we may not get our promised property tax relief. We need lower property taxes now! Stop voting in the people who refuse to cut our property taxes. There is so much waste in Baltimore City. We need to cut spending and insane services like housing homeless people in hotels in the county. Give the tax payers a break.
