Speaker: Dylan Casey
Dylan Casey maybe best known for his prowess on the road these days, but he's also quite accomplished on the track. In 1998, Casey became just the third U.S. cyclist in history to win national championships in both disciplines, winning the time trial event in the National Road Championships and the pursuit event at the National Track Championships.

In 2000, Casey became an Olympian when he competed in the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. The year before he won a gold medal in individual pursuit at the 1999 Pan Am Games.

Casey has stage wins from the 1997 Tour of Ohio and 89er Stage Race and the 1998 Tour of Tucson, which he also won overall. In 1999, Casey came in third overall at the Tour of Holland, sixth at the First Union Invitational and competed at the Tour of Spain. Stage wins in 2000 included one each at the Redlands Classic, the Tour of Luxembourg, and the Four Days of Dunkerque.

Born in raised in California, Casey graduated from Las Lamas High School in Walnut Creek, CA in 1989. He then went on graduate from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a B.S. in communications information systems in 1994.

This is the first in a new series called Linux HOWTOS. Every week I will post a video explaining how to accomplish something using a GNU/Linux operating system. Please write requests for installments in the comments!

This installment deals with using ndiswrapper to use Windows wireless drivers in Linux. Hardware manufacturers often don't release specifications of their products to the open source community, so programs like ndiswrapper become necessary.

If you have any questions, please ask in the comment field, and I or someone else will do our best to answer. Please avoid 'RTFM'-style answers. They are not welcome. Also please post corrections if I mistakenly give some wrong information.

I hope this project will serve as a valuable resource for people wanting to make the switch from a proprietary operating system to Linux.

***Errata***
If you are using ndiswrapper but have a native kernel module for your wireless card installed, you need to add the line:
blacklist name_of_kernel_module
to you blacklist file (probably /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist ). Running "ndiswrapper -l" (without quotes) as root will give the name of the native linux module you need to blacklist. If the module is already loaded you need to run "rmmod name_of_module" (without quotes) before ndiswrapper will work.

Check and see if your advertised bandwidth is what you're really getting and learn how to compare different internet service providers. Your speed is controlled by your ISP so understanding how it's advertised is key to improving and comparing it.

Yes I know you will go super fast with tons of seeds so quit whinning. Torrents with 10 - 20 people are another story. Tons of people complain their torrent downloads go slow because they're asshats and super-limit the upload rate for fear of the RIAA or their ISP provides horrible upstream rates.

Yes the bandwidth can be capped from where you're downloading from. I'm aware of that. The game download was capped at around 450KB, but I used that as an example comparing kbps to KB/s.

At the end it's not a mistake saying the upload speed is about as fast as you will download on p2p networks/ torrents. Torrents are based on share ratios so you'll get as fast as you can give. As always there are exceptions specially for torrents with tons of seeds but it's a good rule of thumb.

This is the only and definitive way of increasing your connection speed. Your ISP controls it! If it's not going as fast as it should call your ISP's tech support. If you want it faster, compare rates and find what's most affordable for the speed you want. Understanding how they advertise their packages is key to knowing if you're getting ripped off.

Learn to hide any file(s) inside a regular jpg image. Simple quick trick.

When it comes to selecting a water feature for your garden, there is now a huge range to choose from, which are relatively cheap and easy to install when compared to a full blown pond and cascading waterfall. And of course you can create your own unique design, using an interesting urn or basin as a basis for your new feature.

This video shows you some of the alternative styles available, from humble small scale fountains to stand alone pebble fountains and arge sheets of glass and stone with cascading curtains of water. First - a solution for a pebble based fountain, which will cost less than £200 to buy and install. The basic ingredients are a

container - anything that is or can be waterproof is fine, a central stone feature, pebbles, plants and a pump. Our example features a bucket type base, which can be sunk into the ground, surrounded by a shallow tray for plants and pebbles. The central feature is a circular stone ball with a hole at the top for the water. Remember that all running water features require a power source. Water and electricity can be a lethal combination, so do use a qualified electrician to install your electric pump. Some work off solar power, which are suitable if you don't have a power source nearby.The ultimate effect of this water feature when built can enhance your garden and add a tranquil dimension, without requiring much space.

Once you have chosen the type of feature you would like, there are some important considerations about suitability and location:

Is the feature going to be permanent, or will it be something you could move. Availability of power points may be a factor

If you go for a fountain, avoid a windy aspect so that the water does not drain away by being blown over the side of the feature

Don't place your feature too close to trees, or you could have an endless leaf problem

Consider the space you have available, and choose something proportional to the garden.

Decide if you need to add lighting, and given the chosen location, if you can see the lights clearly at night

Remember if you are keeping fish in it, you will need running water to oxygenate it, and it will require more maintenance

If you have young children think carefully about the safety factor

You can add your own choice of aquatic plants and fancy stones to match other features already in your garden. Whatever you decide on, it will certainly give you hours of pleasure and could even be a major talking point for anyone who visits your home.
