My work painting medieval illuminations is a great treasure for me to experience and share. I have learned this art from the master illuminator, Renaud Marlier and his delightful wife, also a master. He has taught me to use the techniques and materials which were used in the medieval period.

The process of painting an illumination is a journey of discovery which is one that must be followed with discipline, carefully heeding, with utmost patience, what the lines and colors teach. It is a meditation which cannot be rushed it the beauty is to unfold in luminous clarity.

I begin with preparing the parchment. This is done by making it supple in water and then streching it to dry on a board. The first lines of the design are transfered carefully from the sketch onto the parchment. If there is to be calligraphy in the work, this is done first. The gilding follows. I gild mostly on a base of gum ammoniac which comes from a tree native to Iran. It is also possible to do a "mirror gilding" which is achieved by laying the gold with fish glue over a raised base of gesso then burnishing it with an agate or hemitite stone. When the gilding is complete, the first layers of colors are painted. I use all natural pigments - organic and inorganic, stones, plants, earths etc. - and use an ancient recipe to bind them of gum arabic, honey water and egg glair. Since blue and red (lapis and minium) were considered the noble colors (being at that time the most expensive - except for true purple - they are applied first. The layers are built up very thinly and transparently to keep the colors' jewel-like qualities. When sufficient colors have been applied, shading is done and highlights added using white or shell gold (a mixture of fine pure gold powder and gum arabic) are added. Finally, black lines are drawn to bring the composition together.

John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (born John Winston Lennon; 9 October 1940 - 8 December 1980) was an English rock musician, singer, writer, songwriter, artist, actor and peace activist who gained worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles.

FISICA DELLA MENTE: ULTIMA FRONTIERA

Oggi si arriva a ipotizzare che il fenomeno della coscienza possa essere la conseguenza di movimenti di elettroni allinterno dei microtubuli delle proteine che costituiscono ogni organismo vivente. Sembra infatti che le proteine approfittino direttamente degli effetti quantici per compiere attività che altrimenti sarebbero assolutamente impossibili.

R.Penrose , famoso fisico dellUniversità di Oxford, rifacendosi ad alcune pionieristiche ricerche dell anestesiologo S.Hameroff e del neurofisiologo B.Libet, ipotizzò che i processi cerebrali come la coscienza o la consapevolezza dovessero essere direttamente collegate al fenomeno fisico noto come coerenza quantistica. Tale fenomeno è quel meccanismo fisico per cui i metalli portati a bassa temperatura manifestano il fenomeno della superconduttività dell elettricità senza opporre resistenza.

Una situazione molto simile, seppure in condizioni ambientali decisamente diverse, avviene secondo Penrose anche a livello cerebrale, in particolare a livello dei tubuli : levento cosciente nelluomo, e cioè il passaggio dallo stato di pre-coscienza allo stato di coscienza, avviene al raggiungimento da parte dei tubuli dello stato di massima eccitazione coerente. Come gli elettroni nella superconduttività (che muovendosi allunisono permettono alla corrente di muoversi senza ostacoli), così la globalizzazione della coerenza tra i tubuli cerebrali permette il verificarsi del processo cognitivo.

Il tempo di transizione della fase pre-cosciente alla fase cosciente con la conseguente attivazione del segnale motore che consente ad esempio di muovere un braccio, dura circa mezzo secondo. Il susseguirsi delle transizioni dal livello minimo al livello massimo di coerenza dei tubuli, costituisce il corso della coscienza, lo scorrere del tempo.

I fenomeni di coerenza quantistica oltre a spiegare razionalmente le dinamiche dei processi cognitivi, darebbero conto di quello che Penrose chiama Senso Unitario della mente. Il processo cosciente non può mai essere frutto dellattivazione di una singola area del cervello ma deve scaturire dall azione concertata in un gran numero di zone della mente. Loscillazione coerente dei tubuli, la quale interessa la maggior parte del cervello, provvederebbe egregiamente a quel collegamento globale essenziale per l estrinsecazione dell atto mentale
