For most of the year, Kounoniya is a peaceful place. But in winter, religious ritual joins with drunken delirium to create one of Japan's most extraordinary sights -- the Nude Festival.

In temperatures close to zero, a designated 'Spirit Man' is stripped and beaten by the crowd. The ritual, which dates back over a thousand years, is meant to absorb the city's punishment and brings good luck. As one participant admits: "It's more important than my wife."

A Japanese vehicle manufacturer unveiled the prototype of a new electric motorbike carrying a hybrid magnetic motor, which can run almost noiselessly up to 180 kilometres (112 miles) on one charge. Tokyo-based Axle Corporation says that the battery of the next-generation electric vehicle motorbike can be charged at home, in the same way as a cellular phone. It takes a little over 6 hours to fully charge the battery, and the vehicle's maximum speed is capable of reaching 150 kilometres per hour (93 miles per hour).

The company says the futuristic motorbike enjoys high energy efficiency thanks to a state-of-the-art magnetic motor which is a hybrid between a electromagnet and a permanent magnet. The new motor, called SUMO, short for "super motor," is housed inside the bike's rear wheel. The manufacture says the new motor is seven-times more cost efficient than gas-powered scooters.

Daisuke Ito, a professional racer who test rode the EV-X7 prototype, said it could potentially replace machines we now see in motor races. "I just feel that in the near future, we'll be seeing these kinds of electric motorbikes running all around town. And when that happens, conventional vehicles could disappear from motor racing, too, and well be competing only in electric vehicles."

It all takes place in the city of Oita, about a 90 minute flight south west of Tokyo, on Kyushu island.

This is LONG, about 37 minutes, but will show what teaching English overseas, particularly in Japan, is like.

This bizarre-looking Goblin Shark was recently found off the coast of Japan.

Extraordinary footage of Japanese Beluga whales that have been trained to blow bubble rings.

The staff of Japanese aquarium were able to take rare pictures of a frilled shark after it was discovered by local residents at Awashima Port , southwest of Tokyo.

This prehistoric shark is rarely seen alive as its natural habitat lies up to 4,200 feet deep under the sea.

Experts at the Awashima Marine Park were able to examine the creature and film it swimming around.

Unfortunately it died a couple of hours after it was moved to its new environment.

Frilled sharks normally inhabit deep sea waters between 400 and 4,200 feet and rarely come to the surface.

Frilled sharks can grow to a length of nearly 6.5 feet and eat deep-sea squids and other soft-bodied preys.

Most specimens are found in the Japanese waters.
