According to the United Nations committee on human rights, British libel laws are a problem in that they severely restrict the discussion of matters of public interest.

Atheist Patrick Greene threatened to sue Ray Comfort for libel because Comfort's ministry distributed bumper stickers calling atheists fools. Patrick withdrew the threat of a lawsuit after 40 atheists told him not to go through with it. Even though he has withdrawn the threat, his idiotic histrionics has provided a weapon to those who want to bash atheists. Greene's behavior has been thoroughly condemned by the atheist community, but I wouldn't be surprised if some religious zealots try to portray this as typical atheist behavior.

A complaint for libel mus allege

(1) a statement of fact;
(2) that is false;
(3) and defamatory;
(4) of and concerning the plaintiff;
(5) that is published to a third party;
(6) not absolutely or conditionally privileged


"As a general proposition no action lies for the publication of a general defamatory statement about a large group or class of persons, on the principle that such a general condemnation could not reasonably be construed as of and concerning each individual member of the group, and the disparagement is too diffuse to rcreate a realistic likelihood of reputational injury to any individual member."



"Civil liability is not permitted for defamation aimed at racial, ethnic, or religious groups. Although slurs directed against Blacks, Hispanics, Jews, Catholics or any other group are repugnant and hateful, they are regarded as beyond the pale of the civil law of defamation. Thus, a defamatory statement aimed at 600 million Muslims was not actionable; 'if the court were to permit an action to lie for defamation of such a multitudinous group we would render meaningless the right guaranteed by the First Amendment to explore issues of public import.' "

Libel is a 1959 British drama film.
While travelling in London, Jeffrey Buckingham (Massie), a Canadian WWII veteran, sees Sir Mark Sebastian Loddon (Bogarde) on the BBC, leading a tour of his grand family home. Buckingham was held in a German POW camp with Loddon, and while watching him, becomes convinced that he is in fact another former POW, Frank Welney (Bogarde), an actor. Buckingham publicly announces his suspicion that Welney murdered Loddon during an escape from the POW camp, and has taken the young nobleman's place. Loddon sues Buckingham for libel, but his mind is still battered by some terrible incident that occurred during his escape fifteen years before, and in time even his loyal wife (deHavilland) begins to doubt him.

UPDATE: 12/20/07 -- The First Amendment is in danger after NY State's highest court failed to protect American authors
from libel judgments awarded by foreign courts.

This documentary short film, produced by the Moving Picture Institute, shows how Saudi billionaire Khalid Bin Mafhouz exploits the British legal system and sues for libel whenever he is the subject of a terrorism accusation.

Directed by MPI fellow Jared Lapidus, the film explains how Mahfouz filed a libel suit against Dr. Rachel Ehrenfeld, author of Funding Evil; How Terrorism is Financed -- and How to Stop It. The suit was not filed in the United States, where the book was published and sold, but instead in London, where Mahfouz associates ordered 23 copies online. The judge ordered all copies of the book pulped, and ordered Ehrenfeld to pay the legal fees and damages, despite the fact that nothing in her book about Saudi funding of terrorism was ever disproved.

Ehrenfeld, however, is fighting back. In The Libel Tourist she speaks about her shocking experience of modern-day book burning by British courts, and the First Amendment lawsuit she filed against Mahfouz. Unfortunately, on December 20, 2007, NY State Court of Appeals sidestepped the First Amendment rights and protections.

Anggota Trio Libels Roni Sianturi sudah lebih 10 tahun hidup menduda. Pasca bercerai dari Atiek CB, Ronny hingga penghujung 2007 ini ternyata masih belum butuh untuk menikah lagi.

Ronny bercerai dari Atiek pada 1994. Di usianya yang sudah memasuki kepala empat, ia belum berpikir untuk mengakhiri masa dudanya.

"Orang melihat menikah itu kan sebagai kebutuhan, tapi aku sih nggak, aku melihatnya ya aku belum butuh itu. Bukan menjadi kebutuhan utama," urainya saat ditemui seorang diri usai menonton konser Titiek Puspa di JIEXPO, Kemayoran, Jakarta Pusat, Rabu (15/11/2007) malam.

Mantan presenter Kuis Piramida itu rupanya juga sudah lelah mengikuti berbagai ajang perjodohan. Ia bosan jika teman-teman dekatnya mengenalkannya pada sejumlah wanita.

Duda kelahiran Makasar, 3 September 1966 itu tak mau menetapkan target kapan akan menyudahi kesendiriannya. Kalaupun harus menikah lagi, ia punya kriteria tertentu untuk calon istrinya.

"Di usia saya yang seperti ini, cewek itu harus seiman, mencintai dan menyayangi keluarga saya," ujar Ronny yang mengaku sudah lama tidak melakoni ritual malam mingguan itu.

Urusan pegal otot pun pernah dialami Edwin Manangsang (39), salah satu anggota grup vokal Trio Libels yang kini lebih banyak berkiprah sebagai pembawa acara. Hal itu dipicu oleh kegilaannya melakukan fitnes.

Pada awalnya ia selalu didampingi instruktur saat menggunakan alat untuk membentuk otot.

"Belakangan saya sok tahu, deh, lebih memilih latihan sendiri," tutur lajang yang dilahirkan di Jakarta dengan nama Rizal Edwin Manangsang ini.Akibat dari itu, esok harinya saat bangun tidur ia merasa pegal-pegal. Otot-otot tubuhnya terasa tidak karuan. Sekujur tubuhnya berat, dibawa untuk duduk pun tidak sanggup.

"Perut dan punggung rasanya kencang. Belum lagi ketika berjalan, sepertinya ada beban berat di kedua paha ini," lanjut lulusan S2 ekonomi dari Amerika Serikat yang kini menjadi karyawan Departemen Keuangan RI ini.

Walaupun masing2 bersolo karir, tpi mrk msh akur2 aja. Dan sy akui kualitas suara mrk, karena lagu solo mrk juga bagus2, itu tandanya mrk tdk cuma jual tampang. Bagi penggemar Trio Libels ada kabar terbaru dr salah sorg personilnya iaitu Yani Libels tlh hijrah ke dunia dangdut. Dgn dikeluarkan album ddut Yani, itu tdk berarti mrk bubar, karena mrk mmg saat ini sdg tdk membuat lagu. Apakah disaat dia menyanyikan lagu dangdut seindah suaranya ketika menyanyikan lagu pop? Dan apakah setelah dia menyanyi dangdut Yani dpt menyanyikan lagu Pop dgn indah jg? Semua tergantung penilaian pendengar Ok?...Sukses utk trio Libels
