Mathews Carves Up Republican Lightweight "Lipstick on a Pig"

I like the autos for many reasons but the revolver still has much to offer the police officer or armed citizen: proven reliability, simplicity, and ease of use. For those unfamiliar with guns and some women, a quality revolver is generally an ideal gun. Here I do a "combat" review of a Smith and Wesson Model "Centennial" 642CT lightweight revolver in .38 Special +P chambering. It's an outstanding choice for concealed carry, backup gun, or in-house security. It's amazingly feathery at only 15.5 oz and as such beats many semi-auto handguns in that department. Other upsides include a full stainless steel barrel (no composite or liner construction here), beautiful matte finished, tough aluminum frame, superb quality throughout, tight lockup, wonderful trigger, excellent grips, and the typically fast S&W cylinder latch. This 642 model also feature very comfortable and very useful Crimson Trace laser grips which add a measure of proven deterrence against bad guys (better to never have to fire a shot I say). Downsides might include very limited firepower at 5 rounds, high cost ($550-ish!), bulkier width for concealment, bad sights (they are horrible), need for bulky speed loaders, and inability to fire single action in this Centennial version. In lightweight revolvers, I prefer the shrouded but accessible hammer on the S&W "Bodyguard" 638 Model, just in case you have to make a longer range accurate shot. But this of course is no target gun...intended for self-defense within about 15 yds or less. In that role the 642CT Centennial will excel, delivering five adequately powerful .38 Special +P rounds with good accuracy and reliability... if you're up to the task. The 642 then is an easy-to-carry, reliable, well-made piece of security that, in its certain roles, I recommend highly.

ABSTRACT

Kilim: Fast, lightweight, cheap message passing in Java.
A million actors, 3x faster than Erlang.

The message passing (MP) paradigm is often seen as a superior alternative to the typical mix of idioms in concurrent (shared-memory, locks) and distributed programming (CORBA/RMI). MP eliminates worries endemic to the shared-memory mindset: lock ordering, failure-coupling, low-level data races and memory models. It simplifies synchronization between data and control planes (no lost signals or updates), and unifies APIs for local and remote process interaction.

Curiously however, there are no efficient frameworks for intra-process message-passing, except for Erlang. This talk describes a Java framework called "Kilim" to fix this state of affairs. Kilim provides:

1. Extremely lightweight user-level threads (actors) with automatic stack management, obtained via CPS transformation.

2. A simple type system that ensures actor isolation by controlling pointer aliasing in messages at compile time, and by ensuring linear ownership of mutable message objects. This permits safe, zero-copy communication.

3. A compact run-time library containing typed mailboxes (with optional flow control), user-definable scheduling and python style generators.

Kilim is portable; one of our explicit goals was to not require changes to the Java language syntax or to the JVM.

Kilim scales comfortably to handle hundreds of thousands of actors and messages on modest hardware. It is fast as well -- task-switching is 1000x faster than Java threads and 60x faster than other lightweight tasking frameworks, and message-passing is 3x faster than Erlang (currently the gold standard for concurrency-oriented programming).

The British-built Ultima GTR has blitzed Top Gear’s test track – setting the fastest time ever recorded by a production car.

But the lightweight sportscar won’t be heading up the Top Gear leaderboard, as the GTR’s run wasn’t an official test for the BBC show.

The spectacular 720bhp Ultima GTR lit up the Dunsfold test track and set a time of 1m 12.8s – more than four seconds faster than the current leader of the board, the Koenigsegg CCX, which managed it in 1m 17.6s.

Sadly, because Top Gear’s tame racing driver wasn’t behind the wheel, the run won’t count as an official Top Gear power lap.
