(RTTNews, July 8, 2008) - Iran has threatened to attack Israel and the U.S. navy in the Gulf as its first response to any attack on its nuclear sites, media reports quoting a senior aide to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Tuesday.
"The first U.S. shot on Iran would set the United States' vital interests in the world on fire," said Ali Shirazi, who is Khamenei's representative to the naval forces of the elite Revolutionary Guards. He said that Tel Aviv and the U.S. fleet in the Persian Gulf would be the targets that would be set on fire in Iran's crushing response.
(World Tribune, June 22, 2007) Iran has expanded its naval presence in the Straits of Hormuz, the passage for an estimated 40 percent of global crude oil shipments.
The U.S. Navy has determined that Iran has amassed a fleet of fast patrol boats in the 43-kilometer straits. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, responsible for strategic programs, leads the effort.
At this point, officials said, IRGC has deployed more than 1,000 Patrol Boats in and around the straits. The vessels, armed with cruise missiles, mines, torpedoes and rocket-propelled grenades, are up to 23 meters in long and can reach a speed of 100 kilometers per hour.
(PressTV, Iran, July/2008) Iran has aimed Shahab-3 ballistic missiles at Israel's nuclear sites, including the Dimona plant, Israeli sources have claimed.
According to several Western and Israeli media outlets, the sources said that Iran was preparing to retaliate against a possible attack by targeting its ballistic missiles Shahab-3 at Dimona.
The Sunday Times said Iran had moved ballistic missiles into launch positions, following an Israeli military maneuver in the Mediterranean earlier this month, which was said to be an apparent rehearsal for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.
(Jerusalem Post, Jul 9, 2008) Defense officials: UN Resolution 1701 on the verge of collapse.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, passed to stop the Second Lebanon War, is on the verge of collapse as Syria continues to rearm Hizbullah, senior defense officials warned Tuesday night ahead of a scheduled security cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Olmert will convene the cabinet to discuss the rearmament of Hizbullah since the Second Lebanon War and to discuss ways to curb the flow of weapons from Syria to the guerrilla group.
During the meeting, the ministers will be briefed by Military Intelligence on Hizbullah's rehabilitation and preparation for another round of violence with Israel.
"Syria is rearming Hizbullah at a rapid pace and this is proof that 1701 has completely failed," one official said.
Iran test-fired nine missiles Wednesday, including ones capable of hitting Israel, making a dramatic show of its readiness to strike back if the United States or Israel attacks it over its nuclear program.
The launches sparked strong U.S. criticism and a jump in oil prices — underlining fears Iran might seal off the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf waterway through which 40 percent of the world's crude passes, if military conflict does break out.
The tests of the long- and medium-range missiles did not appear to mark a significant advance in Iran's missile capability — similar ones have been tested previously. But the timing and location were clearly aimed to send a message, coming as Iran has sharply stepped up the tone of its warnings of retaliation if attacked. This week, a top official of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Ali Shirazi, warned Tel Aviv would be "set on fire" in any Iranian retaliation.
(PressTV, June 29, 2008) Iran is to dig 320,000 graves in border districts to allow for the burial of enemy soldiers in the event of any attack on its territory, a top commander said on Sunday.
"We have plans to dig 15,000 to 20,000 graves in each of the border provinces or a total of 320,000," the commander said.

Does Arab Business Care?
As many Arab companies start to brand themselves as global players, there is growing realization that they have a civic duty to become global stakeholders alongside governments and civil society to help solve global issues such as climate change, water shortages and corruption.
1) What do businesses in the Middle East and North Africa region do today to engage as corporate global citizens?
2) What are the potential financial implications of these global issues (climate change, water shortages and corruption) on companies in MENA?
3) What lessons can be learned from actively engaged and successful international corporations?

Defining Global Citizenship: From Philanthropy to Activism
Contributing to the common good takes many forms, from individual acts of philanthropy to ongoing patterns of social activism.
1) How can individual philanthropists make the best use of their resources? What successful frameworks exist inside and outside the region?
2) Do companies have a responsibility to the wider community, or should they simply contribute funds to "specialist" institutions?
3) What can ordinary members of society do to become active global citizens? How can such activism be encouraged?

Stability in the Broader Middle East: Who Is Taking the Lead?
Many international powers have scaled back their involvement in the Middle East for domestic reasons. This has created an opportunity for regional political leaders to seize the initiative on the region's political conflicts and challenges.
1) How strong is the determination of regional leaders to solve issues on a regional basis? How can recent progress be maintained?
2) What are the linkages between the various issues, and what are the prospects for a "package"?
3) What do regional leaders need from the international community to increase their chances of success?

As seen on 60 Minutes Dubai Inc. reported by Steve Kroft.
The Biggest Story in the World --- Dubai - home of the world's largest construction site and one of the most amazing stories in our world today.
While millions flock to Dubai annually, from an American perspective it's "the Middle East we don't know".
Still surrounded in misunderstanding by so many in the US, the massively positive story of Dubai and Middle East 2.0 is the real story of change in the Gulf.
It is a story of peaceful, constructive excellence and the pursuit of dreams. A story very much in line with true American values.
Dubai is a city in the emirate of Dubai which is part of the United Arab Emirates or UAE in the Persian Gulf. The UAE is part of the GCC, Gulf Cooperative Council, an economic group of nations along the lines of the European Union (EU). The GCC includes the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
The growth in Dubai is representative of the growth in the region. While many in America associate the Arab world, the Middle East, the Gulf or sadly Islam and Muslims with terror and terrorism, war and violence, the real story of the Middle East is what is going on with construction, commerce, art, development and millions of people making a better life for themselves.
There is clearly a big difference between the perceptions of Iraq or other areas in the region and reality. Some people tend to think that Iran, the UAE, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are all the same - the region is as varied as the Americas.
Richard Branson, Tiger Woods, Martha Stewart, Madonna and Donald Trump all have business ventures in Dubai. The area is known mostly for real estate but many other projects continue there daily.
