Prior to speech, there was media speculation either way and it was not clear for much of the speech what he would say.
Masterful management of secrecy of the outcome.
Nail-biting speech revealed Musharraf's decision at the very end.

Musharraf had two choices:
1) challenge the impeachment (hard to make stick)
2) resign to avoid a prolonged process - since the incompetent government would have trouble prosecuting (they had not even revealed charges, or defined the process for impeachment)

In my opinion he was less of a problem for the incompetents as President. Now he will be freer to criticize them. I predict he will join or start a political party (most probably with Sheikh Rasheed and others).

Is this the beginning of the end for Musharraf? While few expected the elections to be fair, there's massive discontent with his rule. The opposition are planning large protests if the poll is rigged.

"He is a usurper! He has to go!" chant protesters at an anti-Musharraf rally. They claim General Musharraf has trampled on the constitution by reinstalling himself as President and staking the courts with compliant judges. "If he can pack the courts with his favourites and suspend the constitution twice, why would he not rig the elections?" Everyone expects Benazir Bhutto's party, the PPP, to win a large sympathy vote in the poll. But her assassination has thrown the PPP into chaos. "Workers feel they have totally lost their way. They're confused", confides the party caretaker. "I don't think the Pakistan People's Party has anything left with Benazir Bhutto gone." Their new leader, Asif Ali Zardari, is a potentially divisive figure who; "doesn't have a good reputation in this country". Bhutto's 19 year old son can not even enter politics for another six years. In contrast, Musharraf has stacked parliament with his supporters and is pulling out all the stops to win the election. With so much at stake, only one thing seems sure: Pakistan is at a critical moment in its turbulant history.

Taj Mahal

Pakistan will hold its general election on schedule in January, but a state of emergency will be kept in place, President Gen. Pervez Musharraf told reporters on Sunday.


"Certainly the emergency is required to ensure peace in Pakistan, to ensure an environment conducive to elections," he said in Islamabad. The elections should be held before Jan. 9, he said.


The dates for both the election and the end of the state of emergency have shifted several times as domestic and international pressure on Musharraf has increased. The United States, a key Pakistani ally, has expressed public concern about the delays.


"I do understand the emergency has to be lifted, but I cannot give a date," Musharraf said.

In a related development, the Associated Press reported that Pakistani officials said Musharraf has given military courts new powers to try civilians on charges including treason and inciting public unrest.

Under the state of emergency, declared Nov. 3, the chief justice of the Supreme Court was replaced and police took to the streets. Former prime minister and Musharraf challenger Benazir Bhutto denounced the government's move.

After the announcement, police barred Bhutto from leaving her home on one occasion and prevented her from visiting the deposed chief justice on another.

On Sunday, she was in Lahore, planning a rally in defiance of a government order.

She called Musharraf's announcement a good first step, but added that it would be hard to hold a vote while the state of emergency continues.

In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also welcomed the decision to hold the election, but also asked Musharraf to end the state of emergency as soon as possible.

Musharraf imposed the state of emergency to curb increasing extremism and problems in the judiciary, he said in announcing the move.

"I suspect that Pakistan's sovereignty is in danger unless timely action is taken," he said.

But his critics and opponents seem to have been the main targets of his actions.
