The Banks of Newfoundland
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

"The Banks Of Newfoundland" is the earliest Newfoundland composition set down in music notation. It was composed by Chief Justice Francis Forbes in 1820 and published in a piano arrangement by Oliver Ditson of Boston. Originally composed as a dance, it was treated as a march by the soldiers of The Royal Newfoundland Regiment during World War I; it later became the Regiment's authorized march.

It has also been associated with the Royal St. John's Regatta since its early days. As a Regatta song it is more popularly known as "Up The Pond", and is traditionally played as the crews pass the bandstand on their return to the stakes. It was later made the official song of the Regatta.

Lew Dite plays his Newfoundland ugly stick (purchased in St. John's about 10 years ago) with a little help from his tie.

The ugly stick is a traditional Newfoundland musical instrument fashioned out of household and tool shed items, typically a mop with bottle caps, tin cans, small bells and other noise makers. The instrument is played with a stick that has undulations carved into it so that it can be dragged across the mop handle to given a rhythmic sound. The instrument's main body is a mop cut to approximately four feet. A tin can is attached to the top. At strategic intervals along the length of the shaft, nails affixed with bottle caps would be nailed to the shaft. The ugly stick is held in one hand at about 3/4 up the shaft and the musician holds the beating stick in the other. The instrument is lifted and dropped on the floor in a rhythmic fashion while the musician strikes the attachments to embellish the sound.
This instrument originated in outports and remote villages. Social gatherings such as concerts (colloquially referred to as "tymes") and kitchen parties, were an important part of the rural culture. The principle melody instruments were accordions and fiddles with rythmic accompaniment from the ugly stick.

"Beaten with the ugly stick" is an American and British idiom for someone or something that looks ugly or unappealing.

This video is comprised of a series of pictures that I took on a recent journey with my sister Jacqueline, back to our old hometown of Moreton's Harbour, Newfoundland. We moved away from that fishing settlement a long, long time ago.

The beautiful and powerful song that I chose for the audio portion of the video called - My Father's Land - was written and sung by Gary Noland.

Gary's voice is one that you will not soon forget. Not only this song, but each of his other songs as well, give the listener a reason to sit back and listen intently to his words, for they carry a message that needs to be heard.

I certainly thank Gary for his generous permission in allowing me to use his song in the making of my video. To learn more about Gary and his music, check out his YouTube channel at:

My Father's Land

Walking in my Father's Land
Even though I never knew the man
All of who and what he was
Has a lot to do with who I am

There is more to it than meets the eye
It's like a classic piece of art
There's a primal urge to scream and cry
It's a beating rhythm in the heart

I go walking in my Father's land
And I'm talking to a gentle wind
Now I'm talking to myself again
Walking alone, all alone

No memories, just fabled stories
It's just like the hour glass sand
Dreams that fizzled into glory
Walking in my Father's land

Those who came first were drawn into the past
By time who has a mighty hand
I've learned that dreams of men can't last
While walking in my Father's land

And I go walking in my Father's land
And I'm talking to a gentle wind
Now I'm talking to myself again
Walking alone, all alone

There are two signs written out for man
One is on stone, above his grave
The other's written in his heart, that only Christ can save
And I go walking in my Father's land

And I'm talking to a gentle wind
Now I'm talking to myself again
Walking alone, walking alone

For hundreds of years, Newfoundland families have long considered not only the codfish but the cod tongues as well, to be among some of the very best food that one can put on the Kitchen table. Mmmmmmm, mmmmmmm, GOOD!

The scenes are an excerpt from the 1986 Cinefort/NFB of Canada co-production, Season on the Water.

It was filmed in Petty Harbour, Nfld.

A short recap of Ron Jeremy's visit to St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada back in May of 2005 during his comedy tour. He appeared at The Cotton Club (a local adult/gentleman's showbar/stripclub) to perform his act but also recorded some commentary about some local St. John's sites.

Myself and my friend Steve Wight saw his performance, got a picture taken with him and when I saw the videos and together with my own pictures I took, I got the idea for this little production.

You seen him as a Pornstar, you seen him as an Actor, you've seen or heard his comedy routines, you've seen him in commercials, movies, cartoons, and TV shows such as Surreal Life but have you ever heard of him as a tour guide or being an educator? This video shows he is not only known for the number of girls he has been with or number of porn movies he has made, or the size of his penis but the size of his I.Q! :-)

One Note Secret Show on George Street, St. John's, Newfoundland Canada.

The White Stripes have been doing 'secret shows' on their Canadian Tour that they announce only on their website within hours of playing. This was totally free, and everyone knew it was a 'One Note Show'.

They put on an incredible show later on that night at Mile One Stadium. So whether you think this show was stupid or not, most of the fans on the street thought it was hilarious, and were glad to be a part of it.
