ANCHOR:
Its been six months since French satellite operator Eutelsat stopped broadcasting NTD programs into China. Helping to get the service resumed are two MPs from the Czech Republic. Our Prague bureau introduces us to these two people.

STORY:
MP Pavel Eybert can remember when the communists ruled the former Czechoslovakia. There was no press freedom and the media was controlled by the state.

[Pavel Eybert, Czech MP]:
"I remember very well the year of 1968 and the following years. When I began to feel problems of freedom of the press and freedom of media and it was a very important matter at that time."

But Mr. Eybert was lucky to be living in southern Bohemia at the time. There he had the chance to hear news broadcasts from Austria and Germany.

[Pavel Eybert, Czech MP]: male
"We heard completely different commentaries and completely different facts from those that were published on Czech television or in the Czech media."

But the majority of people in China arent so lucky.

MP Katerina Jacques believes that pressure from the Chinese regime is behind Eutelsats decision to stop NTD broadcasts to China.

[Katerina Jacques, Czech MP]:
"I believe that if the Chinese regime has a clear conscience then it should not be afraid of any free flow of information. And if they are afraid and if they pressure and step up censorship, it means that something is not in order."

Mr. Eyberts message for Eutelsat:

[Pavel Eybert, Czech MP]:
Action which restricts providing free information might be paid for dearly by them and let them stop with this dealing and let them come back to operating channels that broadcast to countries where democracy needs information for its development.

[Ewa Tomaszewska, Eurodiputada polaca]:
"Las personas que son, por ejemplo, detenidas o torturadas, o maltratados de cualquier otra manera pueden sentirse más seguras porque alguien escuchó acerca de ellos, y tienen el poder de que no son desconocidos."

Tomaszewska también fue encarcelada dos veces por el antiguo partido comunista polaco.

And now an update on NTD's broadcast censorship into China. Over two hundred members of the European parliament have signed a written declaration to help restore NTD's broadcast into mainland China. Here are some testimonies from the European capital.

STORY:
Since July this year, NTD's broadcast signal into China has been cut off by French satellite provider Eutelsat. In reaction to this, over two hundred members of the European Parliament have signed a written declaration to help restore NTD's broadcast into mainland China.

One amongst NTD's supporters who believe in free media in China is British MEP Derek Clark.

[Derek Clark, Member of European Parliament]:
"I believe that the NTDTV company should be allowed to go on broadcasting in China. And the fact that they've been cut off at the Eutelsat satellite system, indicates to me very clearly that they are in fact doing good work."

He also wonders how this act of censorship was made possible in Europe itself.

[Derek Clark, Member of European Parliament]:
"How is it that in Europe, especially here in the EU where they keep on talking about non-discrimination, freedoms for people, human rights...- that they have allowed the Chinese communist government to cut off their people from this only independent source which they have. That surely is very very wrong."

Polish member of European parliament Ewa Tomaszewska knows well of the importance of having free flow of information.

[Ewa Tomaszewska, Polish MEP]:
"People who are for example arrested or tortured, or badly treated in any other way can feel more safe because someone heard of them, and have the power that they aren't unknown to everybody."

Tomaszewska was herself imprisoned twice by the former Polish communist party.

2 songs: Don't trust men and I'M'U.

I"M"U Perf
Music: Lee Hyun Do / Lee Minwoo
Lyrics: Lee Hyun Do / Lee Minwoo

I "M" U = I "love" U
So "M" = "love"
And Minwoo is the new word for love :D
I'M'U was so cute ^^
It'a M-nergy XD
Love the song, love the outfit, love the dance, love the man!
That sideways heart thingy is so adorable!
It's actually rather cool...I wonder if this wasn't supposed to be the title track.
---------------

Perf
Namjareul Mitjima / Don't Trust Men
Music: Kang Dong Chul
Lyrics: Kang Dong Chul

The dancing is awesome ^^ (love 4:55) How is it possible that he was so cute and then seriously hawt a moment later?

Honestly. Miinwoo looked a little dazed during the Don't Trust Men perf...he looked tired even before the perf. Don't know if you can see on youtube, but he was already red and sweating at the beginning (not that he isn't smexy that way), although he was fine after I'M'U.

In his schedule, he was scheduled for both Mcount and M Super concert...which were at the same time and I was wondering how he could be in both places at the same time. It seems he might've performed I'M'U, then he left for the Super Concert and then came back for DTM perf.

We'll see how things go in the comebacks to come. Sept. 26/27th for the other comebacks, and then a concert on the 28th. Whadda a week.

Anyways, he's finally back!
Don't double book yourself on the first day and tire yourself out right away, Minbongie...they're first perfs too!
All things aside, it is a perf with potential. Let's see what Minwoo has in store for us ^^ He's always got something up his sleeves.
M hwaiting! I'm sure everything's going to be great :)
----------

The mystery's been solved after watching fancams. It appears Minbong performed DTM three times and the studio looked hecka hot b/c everyone was sweating and Big tone had to take off his jacket.

[Xiaogao, Restaurante Dongbao Xiaochu]:
"Cuando sirves a cada invitado como si te sirvieras a ti mismo, puedes preparar un buen plato".
El Chef Xiaogao cocina comida cantonesa desde hace diez años, pero aún piensa que tiene mucho que aprender. Y la competencia de cocina de NTD es la oportunidad perfecta.
[Xiaogao, Restaurante Dongbao Xiaochu]:
[Xiaogao, Dongbao Xiaochu Restaurante]:
"El factor más importante es la salsa. Preparamos la salsa agridulce con rafiolepis (un fruto que parece una manzana morada), ciruela, vinagre, azúcar, y jugo de tomate. Es mejor que la mezcla común de azúcar y vinagre. El sabor es mucho mejor."
La competencia preliminar de Asia Pacífico se celebrará los días 20 y 21 de septiembre en Kaohsiung, Taiwán.

ANCHOR: NTDTV's inaugural Chinese International Violin Competition came to a successful close yesterday, as six finalists vied for the top spot.

STORY: Only six remain as the empty stage beckons each finalist to put forth their most outstanding musical renditions.

The playing itself is at its highest level yet.

[Kia-Hui Tan, Outstanding Performance Award Winner]:
"I actually have simply loved music from a young age, and just listened to my mother who told me that I should start playing music. As soon as I heard the violin, I just fell in love with that kind of sound, and I like to perform, to bring the music forth, as well as to make the audience hear what I hear."

As they throw themselves body and soul into the demanding music, it is more accurate to speak of a lifetime of effort.

[Chen-Han Tsai, Bronze Award]:
I think music really touches the soul, both for myself and hopefully to share it with others. It's just played such an important part in my life that I can't even imagine, you know, with out it."

As the music itself reaches a crescendo of difficulty with selections from Niccolo Paganini and Henryk Wieniawski.

[Sherry Kloss, Competition Judge]:
The Philosophy behind this competition appeals to me I am of the school that each person is an individual and if we can strive to pull out that individuality and what differentiates one person from the next then we are successful in the mission."

[Compare]:
"The gold award winner goes to Yan Tong from U.S."

The curtains have closed on NTDTV's Chinese International Violin Competition, but this is of course only the first in a series of 9 competitions aimed at displaying the artistic brilliance of the Chinese people, and Chinese culture.

We hope that you'll continue to join us for all of our coverage of these inspiring events. From the Town Hall Theatre, this is Ryan Mitchell reporting.

Two conservative pro-democracy groups released 10 balloons laden with money and leaflets in Kimpo, South Korea today. One of the groups, Fighters For A Free North Korea, expects the balloons to catch the wind and land across the border into their cut-off communist neighbor.

STORY:
Each balloon carries envelopes that contain a message and either one U.S. dollar or 10 yuan bill.

Some of the messages are reports about North Korea's leader Kim Jong-il, whose ailing health has been reported about in many countries. The groups are also demanding that the North release people abducted from the South.

The group already sent two sets of 100,000 anti-North Korea leaflets into the North in October and earlier this month.

In reaction North Korea threatened to reduce the South to rubble unless it stopped its civic groups from sending anti-Pyongyang literature into the communist state.

While sending leaflets into North Korea is not illegal in South Korea, the ministry said authorities would try hard to stop the civic group members from doing so, angering the anti-North campaigners.

[Kim Ho-nyeon, Unification Ministry]:
"The related authorities, including our Unification Ministry, are aggressively working on it within legal boundaries, urging them not to send leaflets.”

Relations between the two states have increasingly frayed since February when, after 10 years of left-leaning leaders, conservative President Lee Myung-bak took office. He's pledged to get tough with Pyongyang but is also offering massive economic aid if it mends its ways.
Japans anime, manga, and videogame fanatics known as otaku are slowly making their way into mainstream society. Their enthusiasm for animated characters can now be seen on show cars known as Itasha throughout Japan. NTD Tokyo reporter Liliana Yap has more.
The latest trend in otaku culture, or anime-fan culture, is decorating cars, motorcycles, and bicycles with paint, decals and even dolls related to Japanese animation.

Ita-G Festa is the first large scale itasha car gathering since the itasha boom a few years ago.

Itasha literally means painful cars in Japanese, referring to the pain felt when otaku leave the comfort of their fantasy world to join the rest of society in their sha or car. The name is also a pun for Italian cars.

Itasha owners simply enjoy creatively putting on decals of their favorite anime characters on their ride.

[Shunsuke MIA Sato, Lucky Star Itasha Club]:
The character on my car is from anime, I just put the vinyl decal on. But the pink vinyl stripe, I designed it myself and created this form. It seems too ordinary if I only have a character decal, I wanted to make my own itasha, so I made it like this.

Itasha cars are regularly seen on the streets of Akihabara, the popular Tokyo district famous for anime and electronics.

[Tomohisa Shimizu, Ita-G Festival Organizer]:
When I first saw itasha, I was so surprised. We decided to organize this event so more people could see the Itasha culture. The customization is whats most appealing. We hope more people become interested and try it.

Tomohisa says itasha culture is spreading to other Asian countries like Taiwan. When it becomes popular in the U.S. and Europe he hopes Japan will be known as the originator.

Burma dissident and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Aung San Suu Kyi is about to mark her 13th year under house arrest. Not exactly an anniversary to celebrate. Here's the full report.

STORY:
The prisoner of conscience Ms. Suu Kyi, will mark her 13th year under house arrest on Friday.

Suu Kyi, who is general secretary of Burma's opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), is confined to her home in Rangoon and requires official permission, granted rarely, to receive visitors.

[Debbie Stothard, Alternative Asean Network On Burma]:
"Even under the repressive law of the military regime, it appears that the regime itself may have broken their own laws in insisting, in continuing to detain Aung San Suu Kyi. So, her lawyers have been trying to appeal."

Suu Kyi's party the NLD won the 1990 general election by a landslide but the ruling military junta refused to honor the results. The junta just extended her house arrest by another six months in May.

[Debbie Stothard, Alternative Asean Network On Burma]:
"Definitely, the military regime will not be interested in releasing her unless they are guaranteed power in perpetuity. And they are hoping that the election that they hold and control and manipulate in 2010 will give them that opportunity."

Suu Kyi was allowed to meet several times with U.N. envoy Ibrahim Gambari after the junta cracked down on monk-led protests in September 2007. But in August this year, she refused to meet with Gambari who attempted to meet her for a fourth time.

Suu Kyi's snub of Gambari fueled speculation she was fed up with not just the lack of meaningful dialogue between her party and the junta, but what might be described as the United Nations' soft approach to Burma and the handling of the Cyclone Nargis disaster.

Batik is a coloring technique used on textile. It can be found throughout Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. And in Indonesia it is considered a national art form. Our Indonesian team tells us about the latest batik designs sweeping the market.

STORY:
About 50 new trends of batik, by nine famous Indonesian fashion designers, are now on display in Jakarta shops. There is relaxed batik, formal batik, night gown batik and modern batik. It's a part of a government program which started last year and aims to bring batik back to its days of glory.

Batik fashion was revived two years ago by fashion designer Edward Hutabarat. Since then, more designers joined in on the trend, each one with their own unique designs. In a short while, many people in Indonesia started wearing batik... to the cinema, the coffee shop and even the workplace.

[Iva, Artis Indonesia]:
"I like to use it because the designs are cute and up to date with today's fashion world. There is also a wide variety of models we can choose from to suit our mood."

Batik in Indonesia is not just a fashion, but also brings people together. Back when Malaysians claimed batik as their own, Indonesians flocked to the Malaysian embassy in Indonesia to protest.

And in India, several women in New Delhi are getting a remarkable chance to turn their lives around. They belong to India's lower caste, the 'untouchables,' who often get the worst jobs and face discrimination--even though the caste system is illegal. But now, a corporate initiative from Sulabh International, which runs India's modern public toilets, is giving these women the chance to be stars. Here's more:

STORY:
The former-toilet cleaners sashay down the ramp along with top Indian models in a New Delhi fashion show. The women, who used to work cleaning outdoor pits used as toilets, are now proud members of India's In-crowd.

Sulabh International's educational programs have taught hundreds of former-toilet cleaners new skills: including embroidery, handicrafts, and making pickles and noodles. Many have also found success in the business world, running beauty salons and parlors.

[Brindeshwar Pathak, Founder, Sulabh International]:
"This is for the first time that these people are being brought to the forefront. They will take part in a similar program organised by the United Nations elsewhere also. This is spread a message to the entire world that they are not untouchables, they too have a life."

These women will also participate in a series of events organized by the United Nations in New York to mark the International Year of Sanitation. The women are overjoyed by the turn of the events in their lives.

[Sushila Chauhan, Former Toilet Cleaner]:
"People treat us well now, We are not treated like untouchables any more, they even serve us tea. We are happy to be part of the rehabilitation program".

During their stay in New York, the women will also present a short film on their lives and take part in another fashion show.

Now to China. Severe flooding continues in much of the country for the third straight week. Looking at the map it almost seems like a third of the country is under water. The U.S. also been hit by major floods recently, but the scale and the impact pale in comparison to what Chinese people are facing, right on the heels of the deadly May Quake. We have a few numbers to put this latest tragedy in perspective: over 200 people are dead, 1.5 million people have been forced to leave their homes, over 40 million people have been affected, and over 2 billion dollars in economic losses. And all of these numbers are expected to rise. Here's more:

STORY:
Southern and Eastern China is bracing for even more rain in the coming days. The National Meteorological Centre forecast more downpours for nine
provinces, many of which are already suffering from severe flooding.

[Unidentified Villager, Chongqing City, China]:
"This morning it rained a lot and it all collapsed. It started after three this morning, it scared me to death. So we pulled in the fishing net, and all the fish have escaped"

China has its hands full right now preparing for the Olympics in August, but a series of natural disasters this year have cast a shadow over the Games. Beginning with a severe frost in January, a massive earthquake last month, and now ongoing flooding that is affecting 20 out of 22 provinces.

The National Meteorological Centre has forecast more downpours for nine provinces in the next two days.
CHAN:

Orchestrated protests against Falun Gong have continued outside of China, even while Chinese citizens are reeling from the devastating earthquake. Since May 17 Falun Gong practitioners at Quit the Chinese Communist Party informational booths around the world have been verbally and physically attacked by mobs of Chinese, actions that are thought to have been mobilized by the communist regime. Similar incidents occurred in New York, San Francisco, Los Angelos, and Japan in the same four-day period, even though such booths, encouraging people to quit the Chinese Communist Party, have been incident free for the past four years. Falun Gong adherents have been hit with bottles, eggs, and stones and one man in New York went to the hospital for wounds to the head. In New York alone two Chinese were arrested for violence against Falun Gong practitioners. The incidents have been heavily reported by Chinese sate media, who, curiously, have a single unified message: That the mob is spontaneous and is angered by Falun Gong for not donating money to the earthquake effort. The incidents appear to be orchestrated as a publicity stunt by the CCP at a time when nationalism is high. Let's go to LA for a report on the situation there.

Falun gong practitioners and democratic activists gathered in front of Chinese Consulate in L.A. on Wednesday to condemn CCP's bad behavior of stirring up violence to attack Falun Gong practitioners. They appeal peacefully to clarify the truth to the public.

[Wu Fang, China Affairs Magazines Chief Editor]:
"CCP gives the order to backstab, harass, attack, slander, tirade, and fight Falun Gong people. There is one sentence to describe the CCP's situation: they are putting up the last ditch struggle."

[Mrs. Lin, Falun Gong practitioner]:
"We have already peacefully appealed in front of the Chinese Consulate for eight years, while we were sitting here yesterday, suddenly a white car stopped on the roadside, and a man came out of the car and stole our banners all of a sudden".

China Democratic Party West-American branch organizer, Chang Zhou is surprised to see these tactics in the U.S.

[Chang Zhou, China Democratic Party West-American Branch]:
"In America, such country of freedom and faith, it is hard to image CCP forces exist. Those secret agents follow CCP orders and threaten Falun Gong people with violence."

James White,Falun Gong Practitioner]:
"This is terrorism from Chinese secret agents, it is terrorism from China".
