The Biogas Sector Partnership (BSP) in Nepal managed the installation of over 124,000 domestic biogas plants in Nepal between 1992 and 2005. The plants use cattle manure to provide biogas for cooking and lighting. In addition, about 75% of the plants incorporate toilets.

About 80% of the 4.2 million households in Nepal use fuelwood, cattle-dung cakes and agricultural residues for cooking, and kerosene for lighting. Demand for fuelwood substantially exceeds the rate of regrowth, and this is leading to degradation of the land and damage to vital watersheds. Cooking indoors over open fires, and lighting with kerosene, gives dangerous exposure to air pollutants and a high risk of fire, particularly for women and young children who spend much of their time indoors. In addition, women and girls have the drudgery of collecting fuelwood, which typically takes three hours each day.

The Ashden judges commended this project for the many benefits which it provides. The biogas plants replace nearly all the use of fuelwood, and make cooking easier, cleaner and safer. In 20% of houses biogas provides safer lighting as well. This saving of unsustainable fuelwood use also reduces carbon dioxide emissions. The provision of toilets improves sanitation; and the effluent from the biogas plant is a valuable organic compost.

The use of cattle dung to generate biogas is well known in the Indian subcontinent, but in no other place has it been used with such success as in Nepal. The scale of the programme is remarkable. Biogas already serves about one million people (4% of the population of Nepal), and the biogas sector provides about 11,000 permanent jobs in the country. If anyone needed to be convinced that 'small scale can be big' then they need look no further! The Ashden judges also recognised the excellent collaboration between different organisations (BSP, government, construction companies, donors, finance organisations) in order to achieve such outstanding results.

Baltimore is among the major urban centers to embrace Joseph Beuys' ideas. Beginning in the fall of 2000, with the help of community volunteers, 242 indigenous trees were planted locally as social sculpture in Patterson Park, Carroll Park, Wyman Park Dell, and at UMBC. During the first phase, the project initiators provided 100 trees each at Patterson and Carroll Parks, 12 trees and 4 stones at Wyman Park Dell, and 30 Oak trees and granite stones at UMBC. A special ceremony at each site celebrated the revitalized landscape. As with any project of this kind, the long-term health of the trees was an important concern, so a two-year watering and maintenance plan was included in the funding to ensure their survival.

In our world today:

• more than one billion people do not have access to clean water;

• over two billion people do not have adequate sanitation facilities;

• some four million people die each year from diseases associated with the lack of access to safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene

• 4,000 children under five years old die every day from those same associated diseases.

Added to this, in times of disaster and crises, the urgency to meet basic water and sanitation needs saves lives, reduces diseases and restores dignity. The overall water and sanitation challenge is best expressed in the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), in particular goals 2, 3, 4 and 7, which have water and sanitation components. Our response is therefore to set our targets as a contribution to meeting those goals.

The Global Water and Sanitation Initiative (GWSI)

Over the last ten years, the International Federation has established and consolidated a water and sanitation vision, policy and capacity to better address two principle global challenges.

1. Acute water and sanitation challenges, mostly related to crises and disasters, where there is the urgency to provide basic needs to save lives, contain or reduce health threats and restore dignity.

2. Chronic water and sanitation challenges, mostly related to the fact that still a large proportion of the world's poor do not have access to adequate safe water and sanitation, causing death, disease and loss of productivity. Around four million people die every year as a result of poor water and sanitation access; many are children under five years of age.

The GWSI outlines a common approach among National Societies to establish larger-scale, longer-term sustainable water and sanitation programs to contribute more effectively in meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The GWSI, in combination with the MDG initiative and the launch of a second UN decade for water (2005-2015), intends to generate more available resources for Red Cross and Red Crescent water and sanitation projects. During this time, the International Federation plans to target at least an additional five million vulnerable people worldwide.

After losing the first final against Sri Lanka at Adelaide, Australia needed to win at the SCG to force a third and decisive final. When Chaminda Vaas took three quick wickets to dismantle the Australian top order, Andrew Symonds joined captain Ricky Ponting to save the Aussies and in doing so break the Australian partnership record of 234 with twin centuries. I don't feel sorry for the kid at all, but I also think Officer Rivieri should find a new line of work.

Summary of video: It appears that the officer told everyone to stop skateboarding and was in the process of leaving. However, one kid had his IPOD playing in his ears and probably didn't hear him. After the kid is told again to stop skateboarding, he talks to the officer disrespectfully. The officer goes to confiscate his skateboard but the kid doesn't comply, which leads to the officer forcefully collecting it from him.
The kid obviously didn't show any respect to the officer and deserved to get pushed around, while the officer obviously has some attitude (and probably authority complex) problems he needs to work out.

The Advertising Council, in partnership with the National Crime Prevention Council, U.S. Department of Justice, and Crime Prevention Coalition of America, joined today to announce the launch of a new public service advertising PSA campaign designed to educate tweens and teens about how they can play a role in ending cyberbullying.

We are delighted to be joining the National Crime Prevention Council to launch this new campaign to help teenagers combat cyberbullying, said Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of The Advertising Council. This is a serious issue in our communities and we believe these PSAs will inspire young Americans to stop cyberbullying.

Bullying is a widespread problem for our nations youth, and with the rapid rise in electronic communications, cyberbullying using the Internet or mobile devices to send or post harmful or cruel text or images has become a serious issue. According to the National Crime Prevention Council, 43 percent of teens 13 to 17 years old say they have experienced cyberbullying in the past year. Furthermore, studies show that teen girls are the biggest perpetrators. The study also found that nine in ten teens who had experienced cyberbullying 92 percent reported that they knew the person who was bullying them. Additionally, teens are twice as likely to talk to a friend about the incident rather than their parents or another adult.

Created by volunteer ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi, the multimedia campaign includes viral videos directed by Joe Pytka as well as radio and web advertising. A few of the radio and online banner PSAs feature an appearance by McGruff the Crime Dog an icon tweens welcome as a reassuring presence in the advertising telling them to delete damaging emails or text messages and not to forward them.

Our work is based upon a simple insight If you wouldnt do it in person, why do it online? said Matthew Atkatz, Executive Creative Director, Interactive & Media Convergence at Saatchi & Saatchi. He added We chose to focus on the web rather than TV to speak with tweens and teens in the medium where cyberbullying takes place we hope kids will watch these hard-hitting vignettes and share them to spread the message.

The PSAs direct audiences to the website www.ncpc.org to learn more about cyberbullying. The website also includes a special downloadable document for parents.

NCPC has been a leader in bullying prevention education since the late 1990s, so it is fitting that we expand our efforts to address cyberbullying, said NCPC president and CEO Alfonso Lenhardt. Online bullying can have the same debilitating effects on a young person as face to face bullying depression, a drop in grades, loss of self esteem, suicide, and other violent acts.
