When Dr. Don Pettit lived aboard the International Space Station in 2002, he became known for his "Saturday Morning Science" sessions, during which he would demonstrate really cool, simple microgravity experiments.

Earlier this month, Pettit returned to space, this time as member of space shuttle Endeavour's crew on a mission to upgrade the outpost. After 10 days of hard work, the STS-126 crew got some time off Sunday morning and Pettit took the opportunity to film a special episode of Saturday, err, Sunday Morning Science.

Space walking astronauts lost a tool bag while preparing to do work outside the International Space Station. (Nov. 18)

Space shuttle Endeavour and a crew of seven are bound for the international space station. They will double as kitchen and bathroom installers on the mission, undertaking the most extreme home makeover ever attempted in orbit. (Nov. 14)

Regarding Smart Film, its breakthrough feature is that the customer (a level like as distributor, agent or contractor after two to three days of installation training) can directly, easily, and repetitively adhere Smart Film on currently existing glasses or new designed-in glass projects, e.g. hotel bathrooms and living rooms, conference rooms, CEO/executive offices, building façade glass wall systems, public toilets, etc. In addition, Smart Film is different from traditional privacy glasses which need a longer delivery lead time for tailor-made sizes, higher installation cost, higher transportation cost due to heavier weight of two glass panels, and more complex project management for any current existing window glasses at sites.

Smart-Film under opaque status (power-off mode) is able to deliver high projection quality and larger project area (e.g. 100”, 160”, 320”, and etc. by a simple sheet by sheet and edge-to-edge expansion) upon the quality of LCD projector (LCD type projector, preferred, not DLP type) by a way of rear-end projection to glass walls.

So, it would be a fantastic and innovative tool for projection advertising inside shopping malls, theaters, churches, shops, train/metro/subway station lobbies, airport terminal lobbies, etc. around a whole day as well as on building façade glass walls during the night.

In summary, Smart Film can be directly attached on glass and any transparent materials. You can use it for electric curtain and projection screen, It can vary the daylight transmission controlled by building automation.
Smart Film is green building material which can block sun heat and UV, and is proof against water and smudge.

This animation was made for a yearly art festival in my hometown Maastricht (kunsttour.com). Showing all my old stuff wasn't an option. So I started building a set and tried to come up with a story with two characters and a lot of violence : ) Filming took six full days in a period of three weeks. I only had the chance to animate when I had a day off from work. But sculpting, storyboarding and setting up scenes where done every evening.

Here some more details for other filmmakers and people who are interested:

The set was build with a soft wooden floor, styrofoam, montage kit, paint and a little fake plant. The frame rate is mostly 12 fps, but some parts where increased up to 24 fps. Exactly 2532 pictures where taken to complete the animation. The UFO part was shot real time with wires. But you probably saw that already (wires are clearly visible).
All movements of the little blob character where done with replacements. Meaning that every frame has another ready sculpted replacement character. Almost 100 replacements where sculpted for all the
blobs movements in the animation. It's a very quick way to animate : )
The shots where a character comes out of the ground were filmed backwards, because it's easier to slice the character with fishing wire than to rebuild it.
The clay I used is found in almost every toy store. It's modelling clay in a few different colors which stays soft. You can mix colors together to get the color you desire.
Nails with both ends sharp where used to let the humanoid character stand in any position. The nails are hammered in the soft wooden floor and fit in holes under feet that reach a few centimeters up the legs for stability. The characters armature holds up to 30 individual small metal wires in each body part. It's impossible for a limb to break off even if you try. Metal strips are twisted around the metal wires to prevent bending on unwanted places (bones). Check our armature building tutorial:

The puppet is made using the buildup technique. Applying layers of cotton wool soaked in liquid rubber directly onto the armature. Acrylic paint is added to the liquid rubber to get the right color.
I used a Canon MVX20i DV-cam and Stopmotion Pro Version 4. The blur effects where made with the character/object hanging on a wire and then moved the object/character while the frame was averaged. Magix Video Deluxe was used for editing. I used a picture from the moon of my previous animation (Misplaced) in the background.

It's an old Toonami AMV that I've searched for. Now that I've found it, I want to share it with others. I hope I don't get sued...
