The 'Truth Squad' goes after Tony Strickland

Environmentalists are seeing red over Tony Strickland's phony "green" pose in his run for the 19th Senate District seat.

Calling themselves the "Truth Squad," representatives from the California Sierra Club, the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) and Vote the Coast called a press conference on Monday to set the record straight on the former Assemblyman and head of the ultra-right wing California Club for Growth.

Standing on the pristine ocean bluffs of Carpinteria, the group attacked Strickland's sketchy ballot designation as an "Alternative Energy Executive."

"Strickland knows this district supports environmental protection, so after undermining environmental protections for six years in the Assembly, Tony had to make up something, so he pretends to be an alternative energy executive," said Vera Benson of the local chapter of the CLCV. "Strickland has problems telling the truth because voters don't want an extreme anti-environmentalist in office, but we really need a moderate alternative energy advocate like Hannah-Beth Jackson."

"While Tony Strickland's right-wing and insurance company backers tell lies about Hannah-Beth Jackson, Tony Strickland has built his whole campaign on a whopper," said David Allgood, Southern California Director of the CLCV, in a statement released before the event. "Does Tony Strickland really believe that he can vote against environmental priorities over 98 percent of the time, join big oil to fight a landmark California global warming law, vote against the law that created the alternative energy market in California - and now sell himself as an alternative energy advocate? Or, does he think voters aren't smart enough to discover the truth - or to remember that just two years ago he was running for office as a right-wing activist who specialized in defeating moderate Republicans?"

In contrast, Jackson, Strickland's opponent, took home perfect scores in each of the Sierra Club's tallies, wrote green bills and chaired the Natural Resources and Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committees. She quickly distinguished herself as one of the legislature's most dedicated defenders of clean air, safe drinking water, coastal preservation and environmental health.

The Sierra Club's Fran Farina detailed how Strickland totally disregarded the serious concerns of the residents of Simi Valley when he voted against AB 826, the Perchlorate Contamination Prevention Act. Assemblywoman Jackson helped the community, although it was not in her Assembly district, by carrying a bill to clean up toxins in the water source. This bill passed.

Vote the Coast's Susan Jordan spoke about how Strickland's supposed wave energy company was formed with four political friends and how he never put up the initial $5,000 the others had pledged to start the company. It has no business, no paid employees and its permit to study wave energy was sent back as deficient by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

The Truth Squad thinks that voters will not be fooled by the unfounded attacks on Jackson from his friends or the shallow TV commercials Strickland's own campaign has put on TV.

If you live in the counties of Santa Barbara, Ventura, or Los Angeles, you might have seen Strickland's ridiculous ad, which "greenwashes" him as an environmentalist.

Of course, if you know Strickland's record in the State Assembly on the environment, you know there couldn't be anything further from the truth.

And it's about time someone called him on it.

That's why we decided to have a little fun with Strickland's ad by creating a "mash-up" video of it, with our own commentary.

Rod Strickland was selected in the first round of the 1988 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. Traded, Strickland flourished in San Antonio, as the Spurs went 18-6 with him in the starting lineup. He led the club in assists 26 times and averaged 12.3 points and 11.2 assists in 10 playoff games. 1991 NBA Playoffs, he posted decent numbers: 18.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 8.8 assists, and 2.25 steals in 42.0 minutes per game.

In his first season in Washington, Strickland averaged 17.2 ppg and 8.9 apg helping the Bullets make the playoffs in 1997 for the first time in 8 seasons. He also ranked among the NBA's top 10 in assists in the 1991-92 (5th), 1993-94 (6th), 1994-95 (5th) and 1995-96 (4th) seasons. In 1997-98, Strickland had the best season of his career as he averaged 17.8 ppg and a league leading 10.5 apg. During the year, Strickland also became only the 25th player in NBA history to record 10,000 points and 5,000 assists.

Souquet defeated Strickland 6-4 to give the Europeans an overall 9-6 lead but there were some ugly scenes at the end of the match.

The German celebrated his victory with his team mates and then went over to shake his opponent's hand. However, the furious American hurled abuse at Souquet and threw his hand away from him.

That led to an angry exchange as Tony Drago (pictured) screamed at Strickland, who was being booed by the crowd, before someone, either a European competitor or fan, threw a dummy at the US player.

The match had been threatening to boil over as Strickland complained to referee Michaela Tabb twice about her positioning of the 2-ball in the rack as The Pearl was also arguing with the spectators as well.

With the score at 5-3, just as Strickland was about to shoot he looked up at The Kaiser and said 'you're more lucky than you are good!'

Commentator Jim Wych was unhappy with Strickland's antics. "We've seen it all before," said Wych.

"But I can't stand the way he ended that match. You should shake your opponent's hand with respect and he made a big mistake. Earl is losing a lot of fans."

Souquet added: "He (Earl) is sometimes a tough opponent but I actually like to play him. Sometimes he goes over the line and he called me some names.

"On the first day we did not act or play like a team and the team spirit is much better now. We have a three-game lead, which does not mean anything.

"We've got a long way to go to get over the finish line."

Souquet took the lead when he sunk the 9-ball into a blind pocket before an illegal break from Strickland followed by a foul in his next shot took the score to 2-0 to the German.

He broke and ran out the next and Strickland did the same in the fourth. He scratched off the break to extend the German's lead back to three before a golden break by The Pearl, the first of the tournament in its 15th match, made it 4-2.

A misjudged safety from Souquet on the 2-ball helped take it to 4-3 but Strickland smashed the cue ball off the table during the break and with ball-in-hand The Kaiser did the rest.

Now on the hill, Souquet lost the ninth rack but claimed the tenth for a valuable victory.

The Vice Presidential candidate often linked to Senator Barack Obama’s ticket removed himself from the possible running. Ohio Governor Ted Strickland said Tuesday he would absolutely not join the Democratic’s presidential ticket in the fall, if asked. Strickland previously backed Senator Hillary Clinton during her campaign for the party’s nomination, and after her bow-down, has since endorsed Obama for president. The governor said to NPR that while he is not interested in being the VP for Obama, it does not mean he is any less committed to helping him reach the presidency.

And on Tuesday, Senator John McCain continued to push for presidential debates with voters versus the traditional media-led t-v productions. McCain stated that his campaign challenges Obama’s side to 10 debates over the summer. The presumed Republican presidential nominee also suggested that in order to keep the face-offs on a friendly level, that the two travel to the town hall meetings together in the same plane. McCain said QUOTE, “The American people want a respectful and civilized discussion.”
